Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have para-professional level technical, creative and conceptual skills to originate, realise and exhibit a substantial body of resolved work that expresses their own creative vision. Visual artists work within and across many mediums, and their practice may incorporate ceramics, digital art, glasswork, drawing and illustration, jewellery making, painting, photomedia, printmaking, public art, sculpture, textiles or wood design.

Practice at this level is underpinned by application of art theory and history, the ability to engage in critical discourse and to debate ones own work and the work of others.

Visual artists may work in their own practice, or a wide range of contexts across the arts, government or commercial organisations and also bring visual arts perspective to areas such as business, community services and science.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

To enter this qualification, individuals must have the conceptual, technical and organisational skills to create and present work in their chosen creative form. Those skills and knowledge may have been acquired through experience in a creative field or through formal study.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that:

  • your ability to successfully complete the course via an application portfolio of work presented at interview, or via the successful completion of the Diploma of Visual Arts. You may undertake a LLN test as part of orientation or application processes to ensure the correct entry level.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to attend class regularly and paricipate in the class activities. You will need to spend up to approximately 30 hours per week in total on your course work including face to face and self -directed learning.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Full Time course. You will need to attend approximately 16.5 hours of class a week, over 3 days per week, for 34 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 6.4 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 10.9 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research, assessment preparation.

Your exact timetable will be given to you at orientation, and will depend on the electives you have chosen. Your timetable will be three days per week including Wednesdays. Printmaking is timetabled on Mondays 9 am to 3 pm.

Painting is on Tuesdays 10 am to 4 pm. Ceramics is on Thursdays 9 am to 4 pm. Photography is on Fridays 9 am to 4 pm. Core subjects are delivered on Wednesdays from 9 am to 4 pm. You will need to undertake self-directed study in your own time.

Visual Artists work within and across many mediums and at Nepean Arts and Design Centre we offer electives in the Advanced Diploma in ceramics, painting, printmaking, and photography. In addition, learners undertake core studies in drawing and art history /theory. This qualification provides advanced entry into the Bachelor of Creative Practice.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to provide the following resources which is retained on completion of study: Purchase art materials in order to complete your course. Exact costs wil vary according to personal choices but may be up to approximately $500 over the duration of the course.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
