Course Details

This qualification reflects the job roles of workers in the accounting industry, including BAS Agents and contract bookkeepers; and of those employees performing bookkeeping tasks for organisations in a range of industries. It includes preparing and lodging business and instalment activity statements, and providing advice or dealing with the Commissioner on behalf of a taxpayer in relation to activity statements.

Individuals in these roles apply theoretical and specialist knowledge and skills to work autonomously, and exercise judgement in completing routine and non-routine activities.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, it is assumed that you have literacy, numeracy and technical skills at a Certificate III level for success in this course. Contact your TAFE NSW campus if you have any questions about your suitability.

Work functions in the occupational areas where this qualification may be used are subject to regulatory requirements. Refer to the FNS Financial Services Training Package Companion Volume Implementation Guide or the relevant regulator for specific guidance on requirements.

Persons providing a business activity statement (BAS) service for a fee or other reward must be registered by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) and this qualification is currently cited as meeting the TPB education requirements for registration. Other conditions apply, including a designated period of experience. Persons seeking BAS agent registration should check current registration requirements with the TPB, as registration requirements are reviewed regularly.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • have fundamental skills in computer operations and keyboarding, including some basic administration and communication skills, typically gained from secondary education or as a result of life experience in an increasingly technology-savvy world
  • able to interact using a range of technologies as a part of day-to-day life

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time day course. You will need to attend approximately 20.2 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10.1 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 4.2 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study and assignment preparation.

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • are career starters and/or new entrants into the finance sector
  • would like to gain employment as a bookkeeper, BAS agent and/or payroll officer, across a diverse range of industry sectors, for example, Superannuation, Local Government, Business Administration, Financial Services, Accounting and Bookkeeping
  • would like to develop real skills in applying accounting principles and use specialised knowledge relevant in the application of spreadsheets and accounting software (e.g MYOB - Account Right 2018.3)
  • have no experience with accounting principles, software, or the application of spreadsheets

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
