Course Details

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Care (Birth - 5) is a four-year professional degree that qualifies you to work as a teacher in preschools and long day care as a four-year trained teacher, as well as preparing you for employment in other parts of the children's and family services sector. If you love working with children, this accredited four year teaching degree is for you.

As well as practical core units you will undertake a work placement each semester which will allow you to apply what you've learned in a real workplace setting. You will study child development and pedagogical practices, welfare, ethics, diversity and social justice. During work placements, you will have the opportunity to test your theoretical understanding in a real workplace.


  • Students seeking employment in an early childhood centre will need to complete a senior first aid course to meet WorkCover requirements.
  • Students wishing to later register as a teacher for work in primary or secondary education, may also need the Higher School Certificate General Mathematics minimum Band 4 or completion of Mathematics (2 Unit).
  • Where a student does not meet this requirement they can enrol with TAFE NSW to complete the requirement.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section

Applicants are required to hold, at minimum, one of the following to be considered eligible for admission: - a NSW HSC* (Higher School Certificate) or equivalent OR - a recognised Tertiary Preparation Certificate OR - a qualification from a Registered Training Organisation at Certificate IV level or above OR - the completion of at least one year full-time or equivalent in a degree course at a higher education institution.
  • This course requires you to have achieved English at Band 4 level or higher in your HSC. If you do not have Band 4 in English you may need to complete an IELTS test at your own expense and achieve the appropriate score as outlined in the entry requirements to be eligible for entry to this degree

    International applicants must meet proof of eligibility and course entry requirements. In addition, international applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency at a minimum
  • IELTS level of 6.5 with a minimum level of 6 in any one band OR
  • TOEFL (Paper based test): Minimum 580 overall, with 53 Listening, 52 Reading, 59 Structure/ Written Expression, 5.0 TWE, OR
  • TOEFL (Computer based test): Minimum 237 overall, with 19 Listening, 19 Reading, 25 Structure/Writing, OR
  • TOEFL (Internet based test): Minimum 92 overall, with 18 Listening, 17 Reading, 22 Writing, 22 Speaking

    With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

    This course requires students to complete eight workplacements. Before students can go out on workplacement, they need to get a WWCC at their own expense. Students who do not have a WWCC cannot go on workplacement and as such will not be able to complete course requirements.

    A Diploma of Children's Services (Early Childhood Education and Care) or equivalent

    A three year full time Bachelor of Teaching Early Childhood or equivalent

    If you do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements for this course, you may be able to apply for entry into this course based on mature age or disadvantage. Contact the course coordinator for details of evidence that you should attach to your application.

You will need to attend 16 hours of class over 3 days per week for 12 weeks from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Professional Experience attendance is additional and over 3 weeks equalling attendance over 15 weeks.
