The nationally accredited Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care is designed to launch the career of those who want to help others, and begin a career in primary health care for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander clients.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for this course, you need to demonstrate the following:

  • Identify as an Aboriginal person, and have a Confirmation of Aboriginality letter or
  • Have the approval of the local Aboriginal community if you are a non-Aboriginal person, as evidenced by a letter of approval from the local Aboriginal community where you plan to study

You will also need to participate in a phone interview with one of our teaching staff to make sure this is the appropriate course level for you.

Note: In NSW, a Confirmation of Aboriginality letter can be issued by any NSW-incorporated Aboriginal organisation or Local Aboriginal Land Council. Refer to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs for further details.

Traineeship
TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol as a trainee you must:

  • Be employed in the health industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

We strongly recommend you undertake 250 hours of work experience with a suitable industry employer.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

  1. NSW HEALTH

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
Meet NSW Healths - Criminal Record Check requirements;
Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

  1. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

  2. COMMUNITY AND CHILDRENS SERVICES

  1. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • To complete theory and practical assessments of all 17 units which includes 250 workplace hours
  • To complete 250 hours of mandatory work placement with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander client base.
  • Professional clothing and closed in footwear to attend clinical placements.
  • Organise and attend required Dr Appointments to get Vaccination card completed.
  • Transport and accommodation to be paid for by the student if they are undertaking placement in a location other than their hometown.

There are 250 hours of mandatory clinical placement in this course. Learners will need to supply teachers with documentation of National Police Check (NPC), Working With Children Check (WWCC) and completed NSWHEALTH vaccination card and will need to be verified in the Clinconnect system before any clinical placement can be undertaken.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time blended course. You will need to attend approximately 6.4 hours of class. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 15.3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 19.7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including work placement, private study and assignment preparation.

This course is offered by Connected Classroom. This is just like a regular classroom, but teachers and students use the latest video conferencing technologies.

Your teacher can be in one TAFE location, and you can join the class from another TAFE location using video conferencing equipment or a mobile device. You can also join in from a venue in a participating regional community. You will be able to see and talk to your teacher and other students as though they were in the room with you. You will also have access to support to meet your learning needs.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working at the entry level of primary health care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients. Certificate III may be regarded by many jurisdictions as the minimum level for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health work. In some jurisdictions, however, individuals may start at Certificate II level and, when ready, progress to Certificate III. The qualification structure for Certificate III supports both these options. This qualification is suited to Australian Apprenticeship pathways.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
