Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of a variety of workers who use a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge to provide assistance to health professional staff for the care of clients. Health services assistance involves the worker in direct client contact under supervision.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience your fee may decrease from the maximum shown.
Payment by instalment may also be available. Your fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

Additional costs related to this course include:
The costs related to meeting the vaccination requirements for NSW Health. These will vary from person to person.
A National Police Check which may be applied for once you are enrolled in TAFE NSW at a cost of $16.
A Textbook is recommended "Health Services Assistance- Supporting nursing in acute care", Kathryn Austin and Geoff Arnott. Copies are available from the library or you may choose to purchase your own.
A shirt with the TAFE Logo is required for workplacement so that learners are clearly identifiable in their workplacement role. The shirts will be ordered through the TAFE Bookshop and cost $35. (Prices may be subject to change, please check with your teacher closer to the course start date)

WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

1. NSW HEALTH

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
• Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
• Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
• Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

2. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

3. COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES

4. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

There is a group study day on Tuesday and classes are conducted on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 3pm. It is expected that you will undertake self-directed research and written assessment preparation in addition to the time spent in the classroom and workplace.This would be a minimum of 1 additional day each week. There is a requirement to complete 80 hours of workplace experience to demonstrate and assess the skills learned throughout the course. It is recommended that work placement be completed in blocks of 2 weeks following the rostered times of the workplace. Work placement is mandatory but the times and days may be negotiated.

This course is an entry level qualification for those who wish to work in the acute care environment. The course includes face to face training over 6 months and 80 hours of workplace experience to complete additional experience and demonstration of the skills learned throughout the course. It is expected that you will undertake self-directed research and written assessment preparation in addition to the time spent in the classroom and workplace. This qualification contains a number of units that are also part of the Certificate III in Individual Support and Certificate III in Pathology Collection. If you have completed common units in one of these qualifications you will be eligible for credit transfer and your fees will be adjusted accordingly.
WORKPLACEMENT: 80 hours: You will require a National Police Check prior to workplacement. Workplacement will be completed in a Department of Health Facility and therefore you must meet the workplace requirements of NSW Health Policy Directive PD2018_009: Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases. To meet this you will need your vaccination history recorded on the "Vaccination Record Card for Health care Workers and Students".
The course is offered over 4 days each weekfor 6 months and then completion of workplacement requirements.
