Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • First Aid is a unit in this course with delivery outside the scheduled course timetable. First Aid delivery involves 6 hours directed online study and under normal delivery parameters this would be followed by 6 hour face to face workshop and 2 hours assessment. In order to complete First Aid you must be able to demonstrate "two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a resuscitation manikin placed on the floor" and be able to assess for danger and visually and verbally assess the patient.

    This course does not have mandatory work placement however work experience may be organised for the students for up to 35 hours to enhance the skills assessed during the delivery of the course. In order to eligible to complete work experience for this course students will be required to adhere to the NSW Health Placement Requirements if their placement is within NSW Health Central sterilising Units. This includes a National Criminal records check (students may be excluded from work experience in NSW Health centres depending on the outcomes of this report). Students are also required to comply with the NSW Health Pathology Immunisation requirements and may be excluded from work experience.

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

    • Safety glasses: $15

    • USB $5 for the download of delivery material.
    • Students must also have access to a computer and the internet to participate in the connected delivery of the theory matetrials and tutorial sessions.

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • To successfully complete this course:

    • you must be able to completed the required delivery of First Aid HLTAID003 this is outside this delivery schedule with 6 hours directed online study and under normal delivery parameters this would be followed by 6 hour face to face workshop and 2 hours assessment, however in order to maintain social distancing, infection prevention procedures and to follow COVID-19 delivery directives first aid will be delivered as follows: delivery will be in 3 parts: Part 1 is online study and self-assessment which must be completed before the other required components; Part 2 is comprised of 3 compulsory 2 hour connected learning sessions using MS Teams and finally Part 3 is a face to face 2 hour assessment workshop which will be negotiated with the First Aid section on enrolment into first aid and is outside your normal class delivery times.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Sterilisation Services qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 14 Units of competency, including 10 core and 4 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
