Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of pathology collectors. Workers in this role follow known routines and procedures, taking responsibility for their own work under general supervision. They combine communication, customer service and technical skills, and use discretion and judgment to adapt and transfer their skills to different situations.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 35 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
Meet NSW Healths - Criminal Record Check requirements;
Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

  1. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

  2. COMMUNITY AND CHILDRENS SERVICES

  1. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • basic computer skills and have internet access to complete online components of study
  • to be able to travel to Kempsey for work placement in an allocated 35 hour block week of placement
  • to complete HLTAID003 Provide First Aid. Students must be physically able to complete CPR to an adult mannequin on the floor.

Work Placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

  • 35 hours of work placement as set by Pathology North. Work placement will be completed as a block over 1 or 2 weeks at Pathology North, Kempsey, with starts as early as 8:00am. Travel to Kempsey is at student's expense. Students will need to have all required immunisations, WWCC and criminal records check to be eligible for placement with NSW Health. This is also at student's expense.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Part-Time Day Blended course. You will need to attend approximately an average of 4.7 hours of class, over 1 day for 30 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 13.3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 7.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research, assignment preparation, practical and theory review.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • have an interest in health and science, have an inquisitive nature, are detail driven and analytical. As parts of this course are delivered on a Moodle platform, a basic level of computer skills is required.

Blended delivery includes attendance one FULL Friday per week for the first 18 weeks of the course, plus online study via the Moodle platform. The following 12 weeks of Fridays of the course are conducted offsite during placement blocks and 4 hours via online sessions. First Aid will be scheduled outside of these course hours, on a Saturday.

There are additional learning and study tools available for this course, including:

  • Education Support Officer (ESO) available 5 days per week for Moodle support on demand, and assistance with understanding the course content. Students may book up to 1 hour per week with the ESO.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
