COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

You need to meet the following requirements to be able to undertake work placement. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Vaccination and health screenings
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.
During your course you will undertake a mandatory 250 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.
Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

Jurisdictional legislative radiation licensing requirements may apply to candidates who undertake Group A electives for Radiography specialisation.

If Radiography units or a Radiology specialisation is not selected, no licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. For example - if you're studying the Oral Health Promotion, General Anaesthesia and Conscious Sedation, Technical Records or Dental Practice Administration Work skill-sets, then no licencing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements apply.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this qualification can vary between states, territories and industry sectors.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • The applicant/learner is required to have successfully completed the HLT35015 Certificate III in Dental Assisting and hold a current First Aid Certificate. The learner is required to present original Certificate III in Dental Assisting and First Aid transcript to their teacher in charge of their course.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • The Learner is required to complete 50 hours of skills practice in a simulated environment and participated in 250 hours of work placement in a dental practice as detailed in the assessment requirements of the units of competency.
  • To have achieved a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) level at ACSF Level 3 when commencing the course and basic computer skills. This will be assessed as part of your enrolment process.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time evening, blended course. You will need to attend approximately 4 hours of class, over 1 evening a week, for 36 weeks.

As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 15 hours of other study per week. You may also be required to complete approximately 5.3 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours including work experience, private study, research, online learning.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide an advanced level of assistance to a dentist, dental hygienist, dental therapist or oral health therapist, which contributes to the quality of oral health care.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 250 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.
Jurisdictional legislative radiation licensing requirements may apply to candidates who undertake Group A electives for Radiography specialisation.
Wish to work as a dental assistant. Graduates of this qualification may continue studying the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting.

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.
