Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of optical dispensers who dispense and supply optical appliances as prescribed by optometrists and/or ophthalmologists in accordance with Australian standards. Optical dispensers practice in a range of environments including optical dispensaries, optometric practices and laboratories. They may be self-employed or employed by another optical dispenser, an optometrist, a major optical dispensing company or other retailers.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 100 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Note this qualifications supports industry accreditation as adispensing optician in New Zealand.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
Meet NSW Healths - Criminal Record Check requirements;
Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

  1. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

  2. COMMUNITY AND CHILDRENS SERVICES

  1. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • access to computer
  • relaible internet connection, to be able to complete your course work online via Student online learning supoort syStem (OLS).

Work Placement is a requirement of this couse. You will need to complete:

  • minimum 100 hours of direct client contact work in a real workplace
  • three (3), one full week blocked, face to face practical sessions, in a simulated environment that is reflective of industry standards and activities, organised at TAFE NSW Kingswood campus

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is an online course. You will need to complete approximately 7 hours of online study, over a week, for your enrolment duration of 18 months.
You can increase the hours of online study per week to complete the course sooner.

As well as the online component, there is a requirement to do (equivalent of) one hour of face to face or other study per week. Students are required to attend only three (3), one full week blocked, face to face practical sessions, in a simulated environment that is reflective of industry standards and activities, organised at TAFE NSW Kingswood campus.

You can also expect to complete approximately 9 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including independent study, research, practice and assignments, including 100 hours of work placement.

An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail your units and assessments. Practical sessions are held at TAFE NSW Kingswood campus.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

This training is subsidised by the NSW government under Smart and Skilled. The student fee you will need to pay, will be determined according to your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, you may also be eligible for a concession fee, fee exemption or fee free scholarship. Payment by instalments is available.

You may continue with an enrolment into this course if you are not eligible for subsidised training, however the full training fee will be applicable.
