INDUSTRY DEMAND

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can create the career you want.
Non-traineeship
There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.
Traineeship
To be eligible for this course you must:
- Be employed in the optical dispensing industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
- Have a signed traineeship contract

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS
During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.
Our SkillsTeam will carry out an assessment to identify whether you need support with your language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills to ensure you are at the standard of Level 4 proficiency.
Work placement is an important part of your learning experience. Depending on the work placement provider you choose, you may be required to provide evidence of:
- Australian National Police Record Check
- Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- Vaccination and health screenings
- Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires
Your teacher will advise you if and when you need to provide this information.
WORK PLACEMENT
Work placement provides you with opportunities to practise responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.
During your course you will undertake a mandatory 100 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.
You are responsible for arranging your own work placement. Our team can offer support and guidance to assist you.
Work placement generally only begins once you have had significant contact with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from on-the-job industry learning.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
This qualification supports industry accreditation as a dispensing optician in New Zealand.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
To successfully complete this course, you will need:
- access to a computer, printer, software programs
- reliable Internet connection
Work Placement is a requirement of this couse. You will need to complete:
- 100 hours of work experience
- attend three (3) mandatory 4 -5 day block release face to face learning and practical sessions in a simulated optical dispensing workplace that reflects industry best practice standards and activities.
Practical Block 1 and Practical Block 3 are both 4 days, while Practical Block 2 is 5 days in duration.
The simulated environment at TAFE includes undertaking practice with required resources and equipment, which replicate optical dispensing practice environments, and provides equipment and resources where possible. The simulated workshops are conducted at TAFE Digitals optical dispensing training facility at TAFE NSW Nepean campus. Work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of this course. Due to the impacts of COVID 19 and the disruption to service provision in the Early Childhood, Aged Care, Health and Community Services Sectors, there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a self paced, online course. You will need to complete approximately 8 hours of online study, over a week, for your enrolment duration of 18 months. You can increase the hours of online study per week to complete the course sooner.
As well as the online component, there is a requirement to do (equivalent of) two hours of face to face or other study per week. Students are required to attend 3 compulsory practical sessions of 5 days duration each session during this course.
You can also expect to complete approximately 8 hours of additional study each week outside of online study hours, including independant study, research, practise and assignments.

An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail your units and assessments. Practical sessions are held at TAFE NSW Nepean campus.
SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
