Course Details

This course provides the skills and knowledge to work as an enrolled nurse under the supervision of the registered nurse in a variety of settings including acute, aged care, community, rehabilitation and mental health. It will provide the theoretical and practical skills to:
- relate the concepts of the person, environment and health to the safe and effective practice of nursing
- participate in a multidisciplinary team to assist the individual to meet their needs
- practise in a safe and culturally competent manner to meet the physical, psychosocial, emotional and mental health needs of individuals
- practice within the nursing professional standards, codes of practice and state legislation
- develop, monitor and maintain a holistic plan of care in collaboration with the RN, multidisciplinary team
- demonstrate effective communication and documentation skills in a variety of healthcare settings
- participate in professional development of self
- practise within safety standards and quality improvement guidelines
- engage in reflective practice, nursing research and critically analyse and apply evidence based practice to nursing care

To complete the Diploma of Nursing students are required to successfully complete all units and complete a minimum of 400hrs of unpaid professional experience to meet the assessment requirements of the units. On completion of HLT54115 qualification students are eligible to apply for registration as an Enrolled Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (http://www.ahpra.gov.au).

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
If you are enrolling in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for at least 2 minutes on the floor. If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

English language requirements for course entry
You must demonstrate your English language competency in one of the following ways:

1. If English is your primary language and you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed in English in one of the recognised countries, including at least two years between years 7 and 12. (Recognised countries are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, and USA)

OR

2. Completion of five years (full-time equivalent) continuous education taught and assessed solely in English, which includes a combination of secondary, tertiary, or secondary vocational education qualifications, or a combination of all three in one of the recognised countries above no more than five years prior to applying for registration

NOTE: the English language requirements includes that your Diploma of Nursing must be a minimum of one year full time equivalent pre-registration program of study otherwise English language testing is an additional requirement.

3. English Language achievement in AHPRA approved tests including: (Please note that the results can be collected across two tests within a six month period)
- Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination with a minimum score overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the 4 components - listening, reading, writing and speaking from one test sitting.
- Occupational English Test (OET) with minimum score of B in each of the 4 components
- PTE Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the 4 components in one sitting
- TOEFL iBT at a minimum overall score of 94 with reading at a minimum of 24, listening a minimum of 24, speaking at a minimum of 23 and writing at a minimum of 27
- Other English language tests approved by the Board from time to time
All applicants are required to attend an Information Session. At this session you will complete a pre enrolment literacy and numeracy assessment, meet with teaching staff and get more information about the course. These are held every Monday at 10am at Meadowbank TAFE, See Street Meadowbank, Block K, Level 2, Room 2.22. To achieve this qualification, students must also complete at least 400 hours of documented work placement as detailed in the 'Assessment Requirements' of the units of competency.
Professional experience
With supervised professional experience, you will reinforce the theory and skills learned in class while gaining real-world experience in a healthcare environment. Prior to undertaking professional experience you must be prepared to:
1. NSW HEALTH
Before you commence any professional experience in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
- Meet NSW Health's - Criminal Record Check requirements;
- Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
- Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

2. AGED CARE WORK
Before you undertake any professional experience in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a National Criminal Record Check. Visit:

3. COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN'S SERVICES

4. STUDENT READINESS FOR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Professional experience will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

You can expect to do an additional at least 12 hours/week of self-directed study, which may include research, written, online and/or workplace activity. Entry to this course is by application and interview.

You will need to attend three days per week (Tuesday to Thursday) during theoretical 'Block Weeks' from 8:30AM to 3:30PM. There will be a minimum 400 hours of mandatory clinical placement where you will be required to attend a variety of shifts from Tuesday to Thursday. The course will run over 15-18 months depending on clinical placement.
