Diploma of Nursing

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are 4 steps to apply for entry to this course:

1. Submit an application form. Enquire now to receive your application form.
2. Complete a language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment. To continue to the next stage, you must achieve an English language result of Level 3 or above.
3. Attend an interview. At the interview you must provide evidence that you have completed:

• Year 12 of high school or a Certificate III qualification or its equivalent

4. In addition to the TAFE NSW LLN requirement above, to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Enrolled Nurse, you must meet the NMBA's English language requirements before you enrol with TAFE NSW.
   You will need to demonstrate that you meet the NMBAs English language skills registration standard by providing evidence and declaring that English is your primary language or providing a valid ELS test result.

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you need to meet specific requirements to complete your course.

For the Diploma of Nursing, you must be at least 18 years old for your first work placement. You also need to provide evidence of your:

• Working with Children Check
• Criminal History Check
• Vaccination and health screenings
• Anything else your work placement provider needs

Your teacher will let you know when this is required.

If your work placement is with NSW Health you will also need to:

• Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct and any other forms
• Complete mandatory online modules
• Take an occupational assessment and provide your health care worker/student vaccination record

WORK PLACEMENT

During your course, you will undertake a mandatory 440 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer. This meets the minimum 400 hours required by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).

TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you:

• Have interpersonal skills
• Are willing to work rotating shifts in your career as a nurse

Physical ability

You must have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:

• Manual lifting
• First aid responses like performing CPR while kneeling on the floor

Certain aspects of assessment rely on your physical ability to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins at floor level, and respond to an emergency where there may be a risk to life.

If you are unable to meet these physical requirements, you will not be able to complete this course.

Note: TAFE NSW will only grant credit for HLTEEN units completed with a provider accredited by the ANMAC, and recognised as an approved program of study by the NMBA in accordance with the Enrolled Nurse Accreditation Standards. Visit ahpra.gov.au/Accreditation/Approved-Programs-of-Study.aspx.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

You need to be a registered practitioner to apply for jobs in the industry. Completion of an NMBA approved Diploma of Nursing program will make you eligible to apply to the NMBA for registration as an Enrolled Nurse.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

• All students are required to demonstrate they are able to meet the required literacy and numeracy requirements of the course prior to gaining entry. This is demonstrated through achieving LLN Level 3 working at Level 4 or above in RU Ready (Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)). The RU Ready assessment will be completed as part of the application process which also includes a written application and interview.
• Satisfactory completion of the NSW Higher School Certificate (Year12) or equivalent from another state/territory or
• Satisfactory completion of a Certificate III (AQF level 3) qualification or equivalent or
• Language, Literacy, Numeracy and English language requirements for course entry for all students

To successfully complete this course, you will need an ability to provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid to an expected standard. Certain aspects of assessment in this unit will rely on students physical ability to:

• Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin.
• Perform CPR at floor level on an adult manikin.
• Respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life. Students who are physically unable to meet all assessment requirements will be unable to successfully complete this unit of competency.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice are the professional and industry standards that underpin this course. These standards establish the limits and role boundaries of enrolled nurse practice and must be strictly adhered to. The Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice are aligned to each unit in this qualification. Students must demonstrate these Standards for Practice during their holistic assessment and while being observed in the workplace experience environment to successfully complete the course.
