Course Details

Make a difference as an enrolled nurse in a skills shortage area, with the nationally accredited Diploma of Nursing. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are 4 steps to apply for entry to this course:

  1. Submit an application form. Enquire now to receive your application form.
  2. Complete a language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment. To continue to the next stage, you must achieve an English language result of Level 3 or above.
  3. In addition to the LLN assessment, to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Enrolled Nurse, you must meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's (NMBA) English language requirements before you enrol with TAFE NSW.
    You must meet the NMBA's English language skills registration standard by providing evidence and declaring that English is your primary language or providing a valid ELS test result
  4. Attend an interview and provide evidence that you have completed Year 12 of high school or a Certificate III qualification or its equivalent

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.
For the Diploma of Nursing, you must be at least 18 years old for your first work placement. You also need to provide evidence of your:

  • Working with Children Check
  • National Police Check
  • Vaccination and health screenings
  • Anything else your work placement provider needs
    Your teacher will let you know when this is required.

If your work placement is with NSW Health you will also need to:

  • Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct and any other forms
  • Complete mandatory online modules
  • Take an occupational assessment and provide your health care worker/student vaccination record

WORK PLACEMENT

During your course, you will undertake a mandatory 440 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer. This meets the minimum 400 hours required by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

You need to be a registered practitioner to apply for jobs in the industry. Completion of an NMBA approved Diploma of Nursing program will make you eligible to apply to the NMBA for registration as an Enrolled Nurse.

Physical ability
You must have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:

  • Manual lifting
  • First aid responses like performing CPR while kneeling on the floor
    Certain aspects of assessment rely on your physical ability to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins at floor level, and respond to an emergency where there may be a risk to life.
    If you are unable to meet these physical requirements, you will not be able to complete this course.
    Note:
  • TAFE NSW will only grant credit for HLTENN units completed with a provider accredited by ANMAC, and recognised as an approved program of study by the NMBA in accordance with the Enrolled Nurse Accreditation Standards. Visit ahpra.gov.au/Accreditation/Approved-Programs-of-Study.aspx.
  • TAFE NSW registers all qualifying students with AHPRA. We must notify AHPRA if a student undertaking clinical training has an impairment that may place the public at substantial risk of harm

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be able to successfully complete this course, you will be required to meet minimum entry equirements which include a Certificate III or higher, Higher School Certificate, minimum LLN screening and English language requirements including evidence.

Students must provide:

  • National Police Record Check
  • Working with Children Check
  • Immunisations required by NSW Health for clinical placement.

You will also be required to undertake mandatory work placement hours and must agree to the immunisation verification process for occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against infectious diseases. Physical fitness and aptitude must be demonstrated to meet assessment requirements including HLTAID003, performing CPR on the floor.

Students will be required to undertake mandatory work placement hours and must agree to the immunisation verification process for occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against infectious diseases. 440 unpaid workplace hours will be organised by TAFE NSW in conjunction with NSW Health and or TAFE approved facility to meet the minimum 400 hours required to meet training package requirements. Travel and accommodation for work placement is at students own cost. Work placement is undertaken in four separate block weeks. Full time, 8-hour shifts both morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday.

There is a minimum of 400 hours clinical placement required to complete the course. Placements are arranged by TAFE NSW at facilities and venues that are accredited to host students on clinical placements. Placements are undertaken within the Murrumbidgee and Southern Local Health Districts.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
If you intend to apply for a VET Student Loan, its important you know your student obligations.

This training is subsidised by the NSW Government, and as a result your fee is determined through Training Services NSW formal eligibility criteria. In claiming the concession or exemption, students will be required to supply the required evidence to support the claim in accord with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.

To activate your eligibility you must pay the student fee component PRIOR to commencement of the learning activity.
