  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to provide evidence that you:

    • checked the guidelines for the eye sight requirements as specified on the AMSA website www.amsa.gov.au. It is suggested that students check prior to enrolling that they meet the requisite standards as mentioned on the AMSA website.
  • To be eligible for a General Purpose Hand Near Coastal certificate, under AMSA a student must:

    • Be at least 16 years old on the certificate issue date;
    • Meet medical and eyesight requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange their medical and eyesight assessments and provide a certificate or statement stating that they do not suffer any greater abnormality in colour vision than could be tested by the Ishihara Test;
    • Have the ability to swim 50 metres and to stay afloat for 5 minutes without a lifejacket to complete some of the mandatory assessments within this qualification.
    • Students must bring work overalls, protective eyewear, closed work shoes and sun protection for practical sessions.
    • For wet drills, students also require clothes to get wet in (similar to work clothes, excluding wet suits), the second set of clothes (to change into), a towel, sunscreen, and hat. AMSA does not recommend the use of swimwear with survival practicals.
    • Students will have to make their own way to the practicals for survival, fire as well as the boat practicals
  • To successfully complete this course, you will need:

    • To complete all assignments, attempt and pass all exams as well as the mandatory practicals.
    • There is also a requirement for assessment of MARF030 that a student be able to swim 50m while wearing a lifejacket and float for 5 minutes without wearing a lifejacket in work attire.

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 8 Units of Competency, including 8 core and 0 speciality units.

  • Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment MARF027

  • Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel MARF028
