Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) equips you with the skills to operate vessels up to 12m. This hands-on course will have you ready to start your new career running catamaran tourist trips, fishing charters or off-shore vessels.

Traineeship
TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol as a trainee you must:

  • Be employed in the maritime industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

The maritime industry is regulated by the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). AMSA sets specific requirements for each maritime qualification to ensure you are ready to join the industry. Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria. You will need to meet other requirements through your professional sea service and medical status.

AMSA licensing requirements include:

  • Minimum age requirements when applying for your AMSA certificate
  • Medical and eyesight requirements
  • Minimum professional sea time hours

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • Completed a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal)
  • The ability swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a life jacket and in work attire
  • The ability to handle rough seas without getting seasick
  • The learning, reading, writing, literacy, and numeracy competencies at the level of year 10 at high school

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a flexible course. You will need to attend approximately 8.5 hours of class, over 2-3 days per week, for 52 weeks.

You may also be required to complete approximately 0.7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including extra reading.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to command and operate the engines of a vessel:

  • <12 m in length
  • with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or <500 kW for an inboard engine
  • that is in inshore waters or designated waters
    or
  • as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)

This course is currently scheduled on Monday 6.00pm to 9.00pm, Tuesday 9.00am to 3.00pm Wednesday 9.00am to 9.00pm, Thursday 9.00am to 4.00pm or 6.00pm to 9.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
