The nationally accredited Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) at TAFE NSW will give you the skills and knowledge you need to work in the Australian maritime industry in MED3 roles such as chief or second engineer on vessels less than 12m in length.

INDUSTRY DEMAND

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can create the career you want.
Non-traineeship
There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.
Traineeship
To be eligible for this course you must:
- Be employed in the maritime industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
- Have a signed traineeship contract

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
The maritime industry is regulated by the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). AMSA sets specific requirements for each maritime qualification to ensure you are ready to join the industry.
Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. When you pass the exam and become certified, you will be able to apply for roles and work in the industry.
Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA certificate of competency requirements. You will need to meet other requirements through your professional sea service and medical status.
Make sure you review and meet the AMSA requirements before you enrol in this course. If you do not yet meet the AMSA criteria for certification at this qualification level, research lower level maritime qualifications to determine the best option for you.

- Minimum professional sea time hours
- Minimum age when applying for your AMSA certificate
- Medical and eyesight requirements

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?
To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you:
- Have completed a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal)
- Are able to swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a life jacket and in work attire
- Do not suffer from acute ocean sickness
- Have learning, reading, writing, literacy, and numeracy competencies at Certificate I level so you can successfully achieve course outcomes

Note: Regardless of the study mode you choose, you will be required to attend practical assessment sessions on a vessel, at a workshop, and related facilities. You will need to bring suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) for your assessments. STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a flexible course. You will need to attend approximately 8.1 hours of class, over 2-3 days a week, for 52 weeks.
You may also be required to complete approximately 0.6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including extra reading.
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?
This qualification applies to people working in the Maritime Industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Certificate of Competency in the capacity of:
- Chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <500 kW within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or
- Second engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <750 kW within the EEZ or
- Chief or second engineer on vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ or
- Assistant under direct supervision of a chief engineer
Or - Worker in the engine room of vessels <80 m long with propulsion power <3000 kW

SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
