The nationally accredited Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) at TAFE NSW will give you the skills and knowledge you need to work in the Australian maritime industry in MED3 roles such as chief or second engineer on vessels less than 12 m in length.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

The maritime industry is regulated by the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). AMSA sets specific requirements for each maritime qualification to ensure you are ready to join the industry. Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria. You will need to meet other requirements through your professional sea service and medical status.

AMSA licensing requirements include:

  • Minimum age requirements when applying for your AMSA certificate
  • Medical and eyesight requirements
  • Minimum professional sea time hours

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • Completed a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal)
  • The ability swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a life jacket and in work attire
  • The ability to handle rough seas without getting seasick
  • The learning, reading, writing, literacy, and numeracy competencies at the level of year 10 at high school

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence:
There are no academic entry requirements to enrol into this TAFE qualification, though there are other requirements that you must satisfy in order to obtain the AMSA Certificate of Competency, which will enable you to apply for work in the Maritime Industry.

Other requirements may include:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • satisfactory completion of an eyesight test and declaration of medical fitness

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to study and complete online assignments, attend supervised written exams and practical training and assessment sessions.
  • reliable Internet access
  • the ability to attend practical training and assessment sessions in Sydney
  • to provide your own overalls, protective eyewear, and sun protection for practical sessions
  • for sea survival, if applicable, students are required to bring clothes to get wet in (similar to work clothes, but no wet suits), a second set of clothes (to change into), a towel, sunscreen, and hat.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is an online course. You will need to complete approximately 7 hours of online study, each week, for your enrolment duration of 1 year.
You can increase the hours of online study per week to complete the course sooner.

As well as the online component, there is a requirement to do (equivalent of) one hour of face to face or other study per week.

Practical components of this course are delivered in Sydney and include optional classroom tutorials and mandatory practical training and assessment days. In this course there are up to 9 practical sessions run over 6-8 days. A range of dates options are provided for you to select from and book into.

Practical sessions are undertaken after online, unit relevant assignment/s are submitted.

If you choose to complete the practical assessments elsewhere (TAFE NSW Guidelines apply), this may incur an additional expense which becomes your responsibility. Written exams (tests) require supervision and can be undertaken at TAFE Digital Strathfield campus or via private supervision - conditions apply, and details are available on the student portal.

You can also expect to complete approximately 1 hour of additional study each week outside of online study hours, including independent study of Maritime Learning Resources available on the Online Learning Support site, along with other research as required. Assignments are completed and submitted online for teacher assessment.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course delivery is designed for people who:

  • are wanting to gain volunteer or commercial employment in a wide range of water based operations such as on harbour cruises; dolphin and whale watching tours; ferry operations; marina berthing facilities and volunteer or professional water rescue organisations.
  • seek to work as a Marine Engine Driver - MED3 near Coastal, on a vessel of less than 12m in length, with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine, or less than 500 kW for an inboard engine. that is in inshore waters or designated waters, or as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

  • access to Maritime Studies teachers and customer service at TAFE Digital via phone Monday Friday during business hours and via web form and email at any time. Students are encouraged to call and speak with a teacher when they need help with their studies.
  • optional virtual tutorials covering most units are held via the Micrsoft Teams platform which you have access to whilst enrolled in a TAFE NSW course.

All practical training and assessment sessions in this course are delivered in Sydney.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

This training is subsidised by the NSW government under Smart and Skilled.
