Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Knowledge assessments: short answer questions, assignment, closed book exam, multiple choice questions

  • Skills assessments: demonstration under observation with oral questioning on a vessel or simulated work environment

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • There is no work placement for this qualification.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

    • Australian Boating Manual by Capt. Dick Gandy ( $80)
    • Aus Chart 802 ($35), Parallel Ruler, Compass and Dividers ($ 100)
    • All students are expected to wear proper PPE at the practical sessions.
    • Students have to make their own way to the practical venues. Directions will be given on the first day of the course.

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

    • Certificate III - Master up to 24m LICENCE or have completed the course successfully
    • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Certification as a Master less than 35 metres Near Coastal (as defined by the NSCV Part D) will require achievement of the MAR40320 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35 metres Near Coastal), certification as a Master less than 24 metres Near Coastal, an appropriate radio certificate of proficiency, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) final assessment and an AMSA approved first aid certificate.

  • People seeking certification should check with AMSA.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 45 metres Near Coastal) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 22 units of competency, including 22 core and 0 speciality units.
