Course Details
This qualification applies to employees of Civil Aviation Maintenance Organisations (AMOs) or to members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) who perform scheduled inspections, fault diagnosis and repair, and modification of airframes and airframe mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components, and of aircraft engines and (where applicable) propellers.
This is a fully government-subsidised JobTrainer course. Eligibility criteria applies.
The qualification defines the exit from an apprenticeship and may apply to either aircraft maintenance performed on flight lines/ramps and in hangars, or to airframe and engine component repair and overhaul performed in workshops. These outcomes are defined in two streams:
- aircraft maintenance stream
- component maintenance workshop stream.
The qualification consists of:
common units that apply to all Aeroskills specialist streams at AQF Certificate III and IV levels
mechanical and structures technical stream units relating to airframe and engine system and component maintenance
mechanical technical stream units and a small number of avionic stream units that are applicable to the aircraft component maintenance workshop stream.
Because of the wide application of this qualification there is considerable flexibility in the selection of technical stream units and individuals should be mindful of their future career aspirations when selecting units for, in particular, the aircraft maintenance stream. Provided that the correct elective units are selected, the qualification articulates with the MEA50218 Diploma of Aeroskills (Mechanical) which qualifies individuals for the grant by Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of a B1 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence.

INFORMATION SESSIONS
There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course
Block release delivery: Over a three year period student will attend either of the follow blocks:
- 3 x 12 weeks per year = 1250 hours; or
- 2 x 18 weeks per year = 1250 hours.
Students attend years 1, 2 and 3.
In their 4th year students will undertake their workplace journals.
Total attendance: 36 weeks in total x 26 hours per week = 936 hours
STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a part time, Blended course. You will need to attend approximately 6.7 hours of class, over 5 days a week, for 4 years. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 0.1 hours of other study per week.
You may also be required to complete approximately 1.9 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including a Journal/Log of industrial experience and achievement.

The learner target group for Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Mechanical) Aircraft Maintenance stream include Apprentices only.
The learners are employed by Civil Aviation Maintenance Organisations (AMOs) or members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) who perform scheduled inspections, fault diagnosis and repair, and modification of airframes and airframe mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components, and of aircraft engines and (where applicable) propellers including Jetstar and Qantas, BAE, CORPORATE AIR, Sigma Aerospace, Pay's Air Service Pty Ltd, Forest Air Helicopters, Superair Services Pty Ltd and Safran Helicopter Engines Australia Pty Ltd.
The listed units also satisfy CASA requirements for the grant, under Civil Aviation Regulation (CASR) Part 66, of Aircraft Maintenance Engineer B1 License in sub-categories B1.1 and B1.3 when the skills and knowledge requirements align with CASA syllabus requirements in the Companion Volume and CASA Interface and training has been delivered in accordance with the requirements of CASR Part 147.
Entry Points some students enter the Cert IV having completed the Cert II.
This course was developed through extensive industry consultation with aviation organisations including QANTAS and Jet Star.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES
There are a range of study options for NSW Apprentices and eligible non-apprentices with relevant industry work experience in this course.
Under the NSW Government fee-free apprenticeship initiative, NSW apprentices that commence their training on or after 1 July 2018 may be eligible for fee-free training. Apprentices are required to provide evidence of their NSW apprenticeship to finalise their enrolment and applicable fees.
This course is also a TAFE NSW Trade Pathways Qualification and ideal if you have been working in this industry for an extended period of time but havent received a qualification. To be eligible to enrol as a non-apprentice and secure funding, you must firstly meet the Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria and be:
- over 21 years of age
- able to demonstrate and provide evidence of extensive industry experience and
- able to demonstrate relevant ongoing work experience and provide workplace evidence to support the achievement of competence.
You will need to provide personal stationary, calcuators, PPE including safety boots, cotton drill work wear, safety glasses, earmuffs, masks and hard hats for yourself to undertake the course.
