The nationally recognised Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical Trade is your pathway to becoming a fitting machinist, fitter and turner or CNC machinist. TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical Trade as either an apprenticeship or non-apprenticeship, so you can design the career you want.
Depending on the course you choose and the campus you want to study at you will need to provide evidence that you meet all relevant entry criteria.
Apprenticeship
To be eligible for this course, you must:
- Be employed as an apprentice in the mechanical trade industry evidenced by a letter of support from your employer
- Submit your training plan proposal (TPP) with your application
Non-apprenticeship
There may be options available for you to study as a non-apprentice. Enquire today and our Apprenticeship and Traineeship team will support you to understand any eligibility or entry requirements for our non-apprenticeship qualifications.
WORK PLACEMENT
There is no work placement requirement for apprentices taking this qualification, as you will gain your experience on-the-job with your employer.
Non-apprentices will need to be in either relevant employment or have access to appropriate simulated workplace environments to complete the learning and assessment requirements.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a part-time evening, blended delivery course. You will need to attend approximately 8 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 3 years.
You may also be required to complete approximately 9 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including "Each Learner is supplied with a workbook for the unit they are studying. Learners log into the Moodle in their unstructured learning hours to complete the missing key words, phrases/passages in the workbook as part of their assigned homework. At the beginning of each lesson, learners are given a POP Quiz on the assigned subject at the completion of the quiz the teacher will go through the answers with the class. In the workshop learners, complete practical tasks as part of their practical component of the unit assessment, teachers mark the tasks using the marking guide and record the results in the class roll book.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID-19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.
This course is currently scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.
SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

A fee applies for most TAFE NSW courses and must be paid when you enrol. The amount you pay depends on the type of course you study, and on your personal circumstances. An initial payment of $80 is required to confirm your enrolment into this course. If you do not wish to continue with your enrolment, you must formally advise Customer Service of your withdrawal. If you do not withdraw prior to the commencement date of the course, this initial payment is non-refundable. Please contact us on 13 79 74 for further information.
