INDUSTRY DEMAND

According to the Australian Government Job Outlook platform, the number of structural steel and welding trades workers is expected to grow to 82,700 by 2023, with around 47,000 further job openings over 5 years.

This course is superseded by MEM30398. You can still enrol in this course, and you will be contacted if you need to transition into the next version when it is available.

TRAINING PACKAGE REQUIREMENTS
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade as an apprenticeship.

To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be employed as an apprentice in the engineering industry evidenced by a letter of support from your employer
  • Submit your training plan proposal (TPP) with your application

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful:

  • A general construction induction card (commonly known as a white card) - you will need this before you can enter a construction site

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you:

  • Completed Year 10 of high school
  • A good understanding of Maths and English
  • A strong work ethic
  • The ability to work in confined spaces, hot working environments and in onsite or offsite environments
  • A reasonable level of physical fitness

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
  • employed full time
  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified Fabrication Tradesman after successful completion

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to satisfy all requirements of your NSW apprenticeship training plan. This includes all TAFE NSW assessment requirements along with all employer confirmation of competency.
  • to provide and bring to each session appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which may include: - safety glasses, gloves, safety footwear, suitable clothing such as cotton drill work wear and other equipment (e.g. ear protection or respiratory masks) in line with industry requirements for their workplace or worksite.
  • to supply pens, pencils, paper and calculator

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a face to face part time day course. You will need to attend approximately 8 hours of class, 1 day a week, over 3 years.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

RECOGNITION

Before you can start an apprenticeship, you first need to find an employer in the industry you're interested in that will support you through your studies. You and your employer should contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) and tell them you're interested in studying at TAFE NSW.

The ANP will help you and your employer to complete a Training Contract. Once you have a Training Contract, we will help you, your employer and the ANP to complete a Training Plan Proposal. Once you have both these documents, the ANP will lodge them with State Training Services, who will provide further advice about next steps.

Fabrication tradesperson (traditionally referred to as Welding, Boilermaking or Sheetmetal tradesperson). It would be expected that a Fabrication tradesperson would be working at level C10 under the Metal, Engineering and Associated Industries Award.
