Course Details

This course is for people employed as apprentice light metal fabrication tradespersons (traditionally known as sheetmetal working) in the manufacturing, engineering and related industry areas. You will gain the competencies required to work as a light fabrication tradesperson in these areas.

You will acquire skills and knowledge in workplace communication, occupational health and safety, quality procedures systems and planning, engineering measurement, computations and computer technology plus industry-specific skills in light metal fabrication that are relevant to your current or intended employment.

The course duration will vary depending on the training pathway agreed to between you, your employer and the TAFE college.

This course is superseded. You can still enrol in this course, and you will be contacted if you need to transition into the next version when it is available.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

There are no formal Training Package entry requirements for this course.

Pathways into the qualification

There is no qualification entry requirement. It is assumed that the learner is engaged as an apprentice under a Training Contract and that the learner is receiving appropriate structured on the job training while undertaking this
qualification.

This qualification may be accessed by direct entry.

Credit for relevant units of competency achieved should be granted towards this qualification for those who have completed MEM10105 Certificate I in Engineering, MEM10205 Certificate I in Boating Services, MEM20105 Certificate II in Engineering, MEM20205 Certificate II in Engineering - Production Technology or other relevant qualifications. Credit towards this qualification may also include units of competency contained within relevant pre-vocational and pre-apprenticeship programs and Statements of Attainment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
  • employed full time
  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a part-time day course. You will need to attend approximately 6.1 hours of class, over 5 days a week, for 102 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 0.9 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 13.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research and assignment preparation.

Australian Apprenticeships training can be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. TAFE NSW will negotiate your attendance and study pattern with you and your employer.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

Before you can start an apprenticeship, you first need to find an employer in the industry you're interested in that will support you through your studies. You and your employer should contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) and tell them you're interested in studying at TAFE NSW.
The ANP will help you and your employer to complete a Training Contract. Once you have a Training Contract, we will help you, your employer and the ANP to complete a Training Plan Proposal. Once you have both these documents, the ANP will lodge them with State Training Services, who will provide further advice about next steps.
