INDUSTRY DEMAND

The Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques takes account for the rapid integration of future technologies such as robotics, and artificial intelligence and aims to equip you with the knowledge you need to conduct yourself in the laboratory.

Non-traineeship

Traineeship

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the laboratory industry, as evidenced by a letter of support from your employer, as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence of:

  • Skills and knowledge in general science and/or chemistry, maths and general computing skills.

Students who do not have prior chemistry, maths and computing skills are encouraged to enrol in and complete the MSL30118 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills before attempting this MSL40118 Certificate IV qualification.

To be able to successfully complete this course:

  • Students are required to satisfy assessment events outlined in all units of competency. Refer to Student Assessment Guide.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time day course. You will need to attend approximately 19.6 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 27 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 4.8 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including review of structured learning, library and internet based research, assessment preparation, and review of topic test answers.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Have no existing experience working in the laboratory industry, which is considered post-school or paraprofessional.

Skills and knowledge in general science and/or chemistry should exist prior to enrolling, acquired either at high school, previous study or life experience and deemed to be transferrable to this course.
Although the target student group are new to the laboratory industry sector, it is acknowledged they enter the course with organisation, study skills and computing skills, gained through prior study or previous work experience.

Students who do not have prior chemistry, maths and computing skills are encouraged to enrol in and complete the MSL30118 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills before attempting this MSL40118 Certificate IV qualification.

This course is currently scheduled on Wednesday, from 9.00am to 12.30pm, Thursday and Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
