The nationally recognised Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques will put you in your element, as you learn a variety of laboratory procedures under supervision. Hypothesise and test your talents, in our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and work towards a career as a lab technician.

The Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques takes account for the rapid integration of future technologies such as robotics, and artificial intelligence and aims to equip you with the knowledge you need to conduct yourself in the laboratory.

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can design the career you want.


There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.


To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the laboratory industry, as evidenced by a letter of support from your employer, as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • There are no entry requrirements for this course . However, please note that you will need to be able to stand and work on laboratory benches and similar simulated workplaces for long periods of times, be able to carry items from one laboratory to another and be dextrous enough to manipulate laboratory equipment and instruments.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:
-Personal protective equipment including laboratory coat, safety goggles, low heel fully enclosed leather shoes, scientifc calculator, personal stationary and masks (where social distancing is not possible).

This is a Part Time Evening Blended course. You will need to attend approximately 8.70 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 6.40 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 4.60 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including review of structured learning, internet-based research, assessment preparation and review of topic test answers from teacher.


This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques is designed for students who are pre-employment and have no existing experience working in the laboratory industry. Students entering this qualification will generally have an interest in laboratory with some basic organisation & study skills, but limited skills and knowledge in general science.


There are additional learning and study tools available for this course, including:

  • If you are interested in laboratory work but have no existing experience or qualification in laboratory techniques then this qualification is a good start. Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques reflects the role of workers who perform a range of laboratory techniques, including manual, semi-automated and fully automated, to collect and prepare samples in a laboratory.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:
You will need to purchase your own laboratory coat (around $25),safety glasses/goggles (around $10), scientific calculator (around $20), permanent marking pen, personal masks (where social distancing is not possible), personal stationary and wear fully enclosed, low heeled shoes in the laboratory.
