Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design and Technology is a hands-on course for fashion design assistants and beginners in the evolving fashion industry. You will learn your craft in a simulated fashion studio environment and focus on mastering the basics of design, patternmaking and sewing.


Through theory and practical course-work, you will learn:

  • To use a sewing machine and overlocker
  • Basic patternmaking and pattern modification
  • To use a pattern to cut fabric
  • To create a mood board
  • To draw fashion sketches
  • Assembling basic garments/bag or cushion


Develop the attributes you need to get ahead in this industry:

  • Passion for the fashion industry including sustainability, garment design and production
  • An interest in fabrics and textiles
  • Desire to learn and follow instructions


Completing this course will give you:

  • A nationally recognised Certificate II qualification

This is a full time, on campus course. You must attend approximately 12 hours of class. You may also be required to complete approximately 8 hours of additional study. This additional study could include private study, work placements and research.

The course will run 2 days a week for 18 weeks.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday with day classes. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

  • A Design, Sewing, and Pattern-making materials list will be given to students on the first day. Items are to be purchased in the first 3 weeks of commencement of class.

  • Students should have access to laptops or computers, sewing machines, and overlockers to be able to complete homework and assessments.
