Course Details

The nationally recognised Certificate III in Millinery lets you explore your creative flair as a milliner. Gain the skills to select materials, cut a pattern and block hats, and learn the career fundamentals of building your business or pursuing a global career with a fashion house.


Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, learn to:

  • Identify materials

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • To have basic knowledge and experience in using a computer. This course requires all entrants to have an ACSF level 2 in language, literacy and numeracy (LLN). This will enable sufficient LLN skills to read and interpret simple documents and prepare written reports. This is particularly important as Work Health & Safety (WHS) room & equipment signage and class documentation must be thoroughly understood when working in all of the Fashion Technology workrooms. Entrants need to be prepared to complete a minimum of 2 - 3 hours a week working on assignments outside of class time.

This is a part-time day, blended course. You will need to attend approximately 6.4 hours of class, 1 day a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 8 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 3 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, revision of class content, research and preparation for assessments & assignment preparation.


This qualification is targeted towards adult learners wishing to diversify their role in the fashion industry as a milliner. Target student groups do not need to have any previous fashion qualifications and may be seeking to work as a junior milliner or start a junior milliner in the fashion industry.

However, some students will complete this qualification to gain necessary under pinning skills to prepare them for the following study pathways:

CUA50415-02V03 Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services - Costume for Performance

It is expected that students will have digital skills that they have acquired through their study at school and life experience such as basic skills in working with computers, working on digital documents, and using the internet. Through school and life experience they have a capability in:

  • reading and understanding a range of material
  • writing including taking notes and completing written assignments
  • interacting with others
  • basic time management and organisational skills to take responsibility for following their timetable and managing their study schedule.


There are additional learning and study tools available for this course, including:

  • All enrolled Fashion Technology students will have an ADOBE Creative Cloud and a WGSN account to use at home. There are two Digital & Design simulated workrooms each including 25 PC computers installed with Adobe Creative Cloud, Wacom tablets, Microsoft Office. Ultimo college also offers training in Gerber Technology and Lectra Systems, which are fashion industry specific digital patternmaking & grading software programs.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. This course is currently scheduled on Wednesday from 2.30pm to 9.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

You will be required to purchase personal equipment, tools and your millinery fabrics to create your own hats. This cost will depend on types of materials chosen. Cardboard, Pattern Paper and Calico will be provided. Students will need to have access to a computer outside of class hours to complete some of the units of study. If you do not have a computer at home you will be able to access computers in the college library to complete your homework. It would also be beneficial to students if they have access to a sewing machine to use outside of class hours.
