Course Details

This qualification is intended for design and product development roles in the fashion industry, as well as roles associated with managing fashion business as part of an enterprise. Skills include design and product development, as well as technical production skills and business.

Skills may be applied at various stages across the design, production and supply chain continuum, according to workplace roles and enterprise requirements. Outcomes allow for specialisation in fashion design or business, as well as generalist roles.

This qualification applies to management of textile, clothing and footwear (TCF) operations that requires knowledge of fashion design and technical production processes, the use of emerging technologies and TCF merchandising techniques that may be applied at various stages of the supply chain.

This qualification offers a generic MST60116 Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising, as well as two pathways targeting the skill requirements of fashion designer and fashion business management.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • This is an advanced entry course offering. You are required to have completed MST50116 Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising, or equivalent.
  • Units of competency studied in the Diploma course will be credited into the Advanced Diploma towards course completion.


This is a full time blended course. You will need to attend approximately 18 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 1 years. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 14 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 7.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, revision of class content, research and preparation for assessments & assignment preparation.


This qualification is intended for roles such as assistant designer, product developer, assistant buyer, assistant merchandiser and garment technician in the fashion industry, as well as assistant roles associated with managing fashion product as part of a fashion enterprise. Skills include design and product development, as well as technical production skills to support management and fashion businesses.

All enrolled Fashion Technology students will have an ADOBE Creative Cloud and a WGSN account to use at home. There are two Digital & Design simulated workrooms installed with Adobe Creative Cloud, Wacom tablets & stylus, Microsoft Office, Gerber Technology and Lectra Systems, which are fashion industry specific digital patternmaking & grading software programs. The Fashion Technology Department at Ultimo College provides fully equipped Patternmaking & Sewing industrial workrooms with industry standard machinery, equipment and resources.

All students will be assessed for their Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) competancies. If a student needs LLN support it will be made available to them to assist their understanding of the curriculum.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday from 8.30am to 4.15pm, Thursday from 9.00am to 4.15pm and Friday from 9.00am to 4.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

Direct payment by Unit of Study instalments is available for this course.

The Units of Study and associated fees for this course are detailed below. Fees are charged on the census day for each Unit of Study. To secure a loan for part or all of your course, you must be eligible and submit a valid application to the Commonwealth for a VET Student Loan. You may withdraw prior to the census date without incurring a fee.


You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

You will be required to purchase fabrics for your major project, this cost will depend on types of materials chosen and the types of products that will make up your final collection. All other resources will be provided. There is a non compulsory student overseas study tour that will cost you approximately $2,500. Students will need to have access to a computer outside of class hours to complete the required homework. It would also be beneficial fo students to have access to a sewing machine to use outside of class hours.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
