Course Details

The nationally recognised Certificate II in Salon Assistant prepares you for exciting work as a salon assistant. Practise hairdressing and barbering techniques on real clients, and with further study become a qualified hairdresser, barber or salon owner.

Traineeship
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate II in Salon Assistant as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol as a trainee you must:

  • Be employed in the salon industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To complete this course:
Students are required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy screening process to determine the level of learner support required (if any) to successfully complete the program. If you have questions or concerns please contact the teaching section prior to enrolling in this course.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to attend all classes, complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed task. In addition, you will be required to work on clients and be prepared to have treatments done yourself. You will be required to supply models for skills practice and assessments.

Your learning resources and assessments are provided online using the Moodle platform. Therefore, you will need access to a personal computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone and reliable internet connection. You are welcome to use the TAFE NSW Library services network for this.

Work Placement:
Students will undertake simulated workplacement in the TAFE clinic/salon as part of their course.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time day course. You will need to attend approximately 8 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 8 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 2 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation and research.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This qualification is for job seekers wishing to enter the Hairdressing Industry as a Salon Assistant or Receptionist in either a Hair or Barber Salon and who would like the formal qualification to improve their employment prospects. It is a pathway to a Hairdressing or Barbering Apprenticeship.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. Also, to ensure that we keep you safe while studying, we may modify our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Thursday from 8.30am to 4.30pm and Friday from 9.00am to 12.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to purchase specialist equipment in order to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times prior to starting class. Detailed Student Equipment Lists will be provided at the orientation session or first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers. The cost for specialist equipment for this course is approx.$100 which you will retain on completion of your training.

Students are also required to wear closed in protective footwear and plain black pants or black skirt below the knee. A uniform at a cost of $30 is available for purchase from TAFE NSW Hairdressing Section.
