Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Knowledge assessments: short answer, extended response, research and theory tasks

  • Practical skills assessments: demonstrations under observation. Depending on your location, you may be required to provide clients for your practical classes and assessments.

  • Simulated workplace projects: scenario-based problem solving

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • There is no work placement for this qualification.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to purchase specialist equipment in order to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times prior to starting class. Detailed Student Equipment Lists will be provided at the orientation session or first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers. The cost for specialist equipment for this course is approx.$100 which you will retain on completion of your training.

  • A uniform at a cost of $ 30.00 is available for purchase from TAFE NSW Hairdressing Section.

  • Students are also required to wear closed in protective footwear and plain black pants or black skirt below the knee.

  • To be enrolled in this course:

  • Students are required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy screening process to determine the level of learner support required (if any) to successfully complete the program. If you have questions or concerns please contact the teaching section prior to enrolling in this course.

  • To successfully complete this course, you will need:

    • to attend all classes
    • complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed task.
  • In addition, you will be required to work on clients and be prepared to have treatments done yourself. You will be required to supply models for skills practice and assessments.

  • Your learning resources and assessments are provided online using the Moodle platform. Therefore, you will need access to a personal computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone and reliable internet connection. You are welcome to use the TAFE NSW Library services network for this.

  • Work Placement:

  • Students will undertake simulated work placement in the TAFE clinic/salon as part of their course.

  • Student must ensure that they wear appropriate clothing and covered footwear that meets industry standards. Extra equipment may be required by the section and student will be notified at orientation.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate II in Salon Assistant qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 12 Units of competency, including 8 core and 4 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
