The nationally recognised Certificate II in Salon Assistant prepares you for exciting work as a salon assistant. Practise hairdressing and barbering techniques on real clients, and with further study become a qualified hairdresser, barber or salon owner.

Traineeship
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate II in Salon Assistant as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol as a trainee you must:
- Be employed in the salon industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
- Have a signed traineeship contract

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
To enrol in this course:
Students are required to compete a screening process with section staff . This will ensure students are suitable and capable to complete the program. Students will attend information/orientation session and are required to purchase personal equipment kit prior to commencement of class. There are no training package entry requirements for this qualification, however it is recommended if you have questions or concerns to talk to the section staff prior to enrolling.
To successfully complete this course, you will need:
- to attend all classes
- complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed tasks
- to work on clients and be prepared to have treatments done yourself
- to supply models for assessments and practice
Work Placement:
Full time students are not required to do additional work placement hours. It is expected that students find a salon and complete some unsupervised hours in a salon to master skills. This can help get part time work and lead to employment at the end of the course.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a Part Time Face to Face course. You must attend approximately 10 hours of class. You may also be required to complete approximately 9 hours of additional study. This additional study could include private study, work placements and research.
The course will run 2-3 days a week for 18 weeks.
Skill development will be completed in a simulated salon on an allocated day either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or a combination of days.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. Also, to ensure that we keep you safe while studying, we may modify our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.
This course is currently scheduled on Thursday all day and Friday morning. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.
SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
