Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Knowledge assessments: short answer, extended response, research and theory tasks

  • Practical skills assessments: demonstrations under observation. Depending on your location, you may be required to provide clients for your practical classes and assessments.

  • Simulated workplace projects: scenario-based problem solving

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • There is no work placement for this qualification.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to purchase the Certificate 2 Salon Assistant kit:

    • Brush kit suppliers and list of items will be supplied to the student to purchase. Cost approximately: $50.00 to $100.00
    • UNIFORM: $ 30.00 (available to purchase from hairdressing department)
  • Student must ensure that they wear appropriate clothing and covered footwear that meets industry standards. All black pants and shoes.

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • To be enrolled in this course students are required to:

    • Compete a screening process with section staff, prior to enrolling. This will ensure that students are suitable and capable to complete the program.
  • Students need to attend all classes, complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed task. In addition, you will be required to work on clients and be prepared to have treatments done yourself. You will be required to supply models for assessments and practice.

  • Work Placement:

  • Full time students are encouraged to do additional work placement hours. It is expected that students find a salon and complete some unsupervised hours in a salon to master skills. This can help get part time work and lead to employment at the end of the course.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate II in Salon Assistant qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 12 Units of competency, including 8 core and 4 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

  • Dry hair to shape SHBHDES001

  • Maintain and organise tools, equipment and work areas SHBHIND001

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
