INDUSTRY DEMAND

The Australian beauty industry is worth billions of dollars and has experienced a decade of uninterrupted growth. Currently there is an identified skills shortage of qualified Beauty Therapists with the industry forecast to continue steady growth to 2023.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

WORK PLACEMENT

Work experience provides you with?exposure to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.

Work experience is not mandatory for this qualification; however, this is a highly practical course. We strongly recommend you undertake 72 hours of work experience with a suitable industry employer to get the most out of your study, expand your network and get real world experience.

Should you choose to complete the nominated 72 hours in industry, you will need to arrange work placement with a suitable employer. Your teachers will arrange an appointment with you to provide more information.

If you are unable to secure work placement with an industry partner, you will be required to complete 72 hours of clinic work in a simulated workplace environment. This will occur at your campus location during normal class times on a day nominated by your teaching section.

Whether you are enrolled full-time or part-time, it is recommended that you start your work placement one week from your course start date.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to attend face to face classes for three days per week for 18 weeks. You will have unstructured learning activities including: online revision, assignment preparation and private study.
  • you will be required to successfully complete 15 units of study to gain the Certificate 3 Beauty Services.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, blended course. You will need to attend approximately 20.5 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 11 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Non-facilitated/undirected learning. This includes learning the student may undertake for revison of content, research and preparations of assessments. Unstructured learning for this qualification comprises of: online revisions, private study and assignment preparation. To deepen knowledge of topics and concepts in this course learners are encouraged to revise content and carry out research activities using the internet and/or library.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • employed as beauticians to provide a range of beauty services including nail, waxing, lash and brow, and basic make-up services. Work is typically conducted in beauty, waxing, brow and nail salons. The course is suitable for school leavers, mature age or those wanting to have a career change as there are no prior work experience or prerequisites required to enrol into this course. Some participants may have completed a part qualification or skill set in Hairdressing or Beauty and/or completed on the job experience and this will permit them to be applicable for recognition of prior learning. The learners with auto credit/RPL will then only be required to attend the face to face sessions of the units they are required to complete to gain the Certificate III qualification. Some study may be undertaken by these learners off campus or self-directed. Allowance is made for the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties, such as speakers of languages other than English. Work is typically in beauty salons, waxing clinics, brow bars, nails salons and some hairdressing salons where these services are offered.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00am to 04:30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:
Incidental expenses - Essential equipment that will be required to complete this course is 1 make up kit which has an approximate cost of $300 - $500 depending on your choice of kit. The make up kits become the physical property of the student, are retained by the student on completion of training and are not consumed during the training. There is also a nail kit for $90. These kits are purchased directly from the manufacturer at trade price, this will be further discussed at orientation and also in your first class. Additionally, students will also have an opportunity to participate in a final assessment photoshoot. There is a TAFE allocated photographer with an approximate cost of $150 or students may choose to source a photographer of their choice.
