Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Nail Technology equips you with another string in your beauty bow to become a nail technician. Learn to make people feel their polished best, express your creativity and use your skills in a beauty salon or start your own business.

The beauty care industry is one of the fastest growing consumer markets in Australia and the number of Beauty Therapists is expected to grow very strongly with around 25,000 job openings over 5 years to 2023.

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Nail Technology as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can design the career you want.


There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.


To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the beauty industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you:

  • Are comfortable practising your skills on your peers and members of the public, and allowing your peers to practice their skills on you
  • Are comfortable touching hands and feet for manicures and pedicures
  • Have professional integrity

  • Have safe, hygienic practices and a high level of personal presentation

Due to the nature of this course, you will be working with a range of chemicals used in acrylics and gels.

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you are required to:

  • complete a screening process with the section staff, to ensure your suitability and capability to complete the program
  • attend the orientation session
  • purchase the personal equipment kit, prior to course commencement

To successfully complete this course, you need:

  • to attend all classes
  • to complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed tasks

In addition, you will be required to work on clients, and be prepared to have treatments done yourself. You will be required to supply models for assessments and practice.

Work Placement:

Full time students are not required to do additional workplacement hours. You will complete workplacement in the TAFE clinic/salon on Thursdays, from 9.00am to 3.30pm, to master skills.

This is a full time day course. You will need to attend approximately 20 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 18 weeks.

You may also be required to complete approximately 11 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including online revision, private study, assessment preparation, and research.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID-19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday, from 9.00am to 4.30pm, and Thursday, from 9.00am to 3.30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You will need to provide the following resources which is retained on completion of study:

  • specialist equipment: $500.00 approx.
  • a uniform/tunic: $50.00 approx.
  • closed in protective footwear, plain black pants, or black skirt below the knee

The specialist equipment is required to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times. A detailed student equipment list, will be provided at the orientation session/first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers.

The uniform/tunic, is to be worn in the simulated salon environment.
