Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

    Students will need to spend some time in a salon throughout the course.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

    • A Specialist Equipment and a Hair Resource Kit in order to develop your skills. A detailed Specialist Equipment List will be provided at the orientation session or via email, along with suggested industry suppliers for you to purchase prior to starting class. The cost of your Hair Resources which is required for practical session/s is approximately $550.00. This goes towards the cost of Head blocks and a uniform. The section will outline when these will be needed.
  • Students are also required to wear closed in protective footwear and plain black pants or black skirt below the knee and are required to bring a laptop and an iPad to class.

  • Students are required to complete a screening process with section staff, prior to enrolling. This is to ensure students have the best opportunity to successfully complete the program.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

    • Completed the SHB20216 Certificate II in Salon Assistant course or any other nationally recognised training related to barbering.
    • Students are required to purchase personal equipment kit prior to commencement of class.
    • Are 21 years old and over (Birth Certificate or Drivers Licence required).
    • Have experience and/or are currently employed in a hairdressing salon where they provide hair services on clients.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Hairdressing qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 28 units of competency, including 21 core and 7 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.

Set amid a tranquil oasis of natural beauty between the forested hills and the sea, TAFE NSW Coffs Harbour is conveniently located near the centre of town. We have an innovatively designed trade centre including an indoor carpentry and joinery centre, where students gain practical skills in carpentry, bricklaying, concreting, plumbing and tiling. The campus also offers a range of creative industry courses, and is one of two campuses to offer a fashion design course on the North Coast.
