Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of barbers who use a range of well-developed sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of barbering services to clients. They use discretion and judgement to provide client services and take responsibility for the outcomes of their own work.

This qualification provides a pathway to work as a barber in any industry environment, usually a barber shop or salon.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • You need to be an apprentice to enrol in this offer with a training plan. Should you have any questions please contact our Apprenticeship team on 99415254 (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
  • employed full time
  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified barber after successful completion

    To successfully complete this course, you will need to complete 26 units of competency, and have agreement from the employer that the apprentice is competent in the vocation to the required industry standard.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Part-Time Day, face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 7 hours of class, over a day per week, for 54 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10.2 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Research tasks, private Study, assignment preparation , informal workplace training.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

The target industry group for this qualification will be registered apprentices with a training plan working in hairdressing salons/barber shops.
Learners may have undertaken a Certificate II in Salon Assistant, a Statement of Attainment in Pre-apprenticeship in barbering or a TVET Course gaining them credit in this qualification.

Individuals enrolling in this course must be employed and under contract as an apprentice in a barber shop.

Australian Apprenticeships training can be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. TAFE NSW will negotiate your attendance and study pattern with you and your employer.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

There are a range of study options for NSW Apprentices and eligible non-apprentices with relevant industry work experience in this course.

Under the NSW Government fee-free apprenticeship initiative, NSW apprentices that commence their training on or after 1 July 2018 may be eligible for fee-free training. Apprentices are required to provide evidence of their NSW apprenticeship to finalise their enrolment and applicable fees.

This course is also a TAFE NSW Trade Pathways Qualification and ideal if you have been working in this industry for an extended period of time but havent received a qualification. To be eligible to enrol as a non-apprentice and secure funding, you must firstly meet the Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria and be:

  • over 21 years of age
  • able to demonstrate and provide evidence of extensive industry experience and
  • able to demonstrate relevant ongoing work experience and provide workplace evidence to support the achievement of competence.

cost approximately $850 from a supplier of your choice. The essential equipment becomes the physical property of the student and will be
retained by the student on completion of training.

Before you can start an apprenticeship, you first need to find an employer in the industry you're interested in that will support you through your studies. You and your employer should contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) and tell them you're interested in studying at TAFE NSW.
The ANP will help you and your employer to complete a Training Contract. Once you have a Training Contract, we will help you, your employer and the ANP to complete a Training Plan Proposal. Once you have both these documents, the ANP will lodge them with State Training Services, who will provide further advice about next steps.
