This qualification reflects the role of barbers who use a range of well-developed sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of barbering services to clients. They use discretion and judgement to provide client services and take responsibility for the outcomes of their own work.
This qualification provides a pathway to work as a barber in any industry environment, usually a barber shop or salon.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

This is a part time day course. You will need to attend approximately 6 hours of class, over 1 days a week, for 64 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7.3 hours of other study per week.
You may also be required to complete approximately 1.6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study assignment preparation, informal workplace training.
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?
This course offering is designed for people who:
- Must be employed and under contract as an apprentice in a Barber salon.
- The workplace is required to support the apprentices learning and be able to provide an environment that exposes the apprentice to the required outcomes outlined in the training package course SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering.

This course is currently scheduled on Wednesdays 8.30 am to 4.00 pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.
SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:
- You will be required to purchase equipment/tools of trade and personal protective equipment (PPE) at an approximate cost of $480 -$550. These tools and equipment will be yours to keep.
- WH&S requirements for classes: You must wear closed in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry.

Before you can start an apprenticeship, you first need to find an employer in the industry you're interested in that will support you through your studies. You and your employer should contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) and tell them you're interested in studying at TAFE NSW.
The ANP will help you and your employer to complete a Training Contract. Once you have a Training Contract, we will help you, your employer and the ANP to complete a Training Plan Proposal. Once you have both these documents, the ANP will lodge them with State Training Services, who will provide further advice about next steps.
