Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to purchase specialist equipment in order to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times. Detailed Student Equipment Lists will be provided at the orientation session or first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers. The cost for specialist equipment for this course is approx. $400.00 which you will retain on completion of your training.

  • Students are also required to wear closed in protective footwear and plain black pants or black skirt below the knee. A uniform can be purchased at a cost of approx $30.00 to wear in the TAFE NSW simulated workplace environment.

  • To be enrolled in this course, you need to provide evidence that you:

    • are over 21 years of age
    • have Credit Transfers from relevant previous study (ie Certificate II in Salon Assistant) and/or Recognition of Prior Learning from relevant workplace experience
    • have current employment in Hairdressing industry to complete the required workplace assessments during the course
  • Local level entry requirements are identified at an ACFS level 3 for this qualification. Students are required to complete a Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment (RUReady) as part of this enrolment.

  • To successfully complete this course, you will need:

    • to attend all classes
    • to complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed tasks
    • to work on clients and supply models for skills practice and assessments
  • Your learning resources and assessments are provided online using the Moodle platform. Therefore, you will need access to a personal computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone and reliable internet connection. You are welcome to use the TAFE NSW Library services network for this.

  • Work Placement:

  • To meet the requirements of this course, students should be employed in a barber shop where they provide barbering services on clients. Work placement is designed to enrich the learning, compliment the formal training and enable an easier transition into the industry once the course is completed.

  • Students will also be provided with access to a simulated work environment at the TAFE campus, providing services on paying clients. TAFE Clinic sessions can be completed as work placement or with a host employer that has been approved by the teaching section.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Barbering qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 26 units of competency, including 21 core and 5 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
