Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

    • Learners should be employed in a barber shop or hairdressing salon where they provide hair services on male clients. Work placement is designed to enrich the learning, compliment the formal training and enable an easier transition into the industry once the course is completed. Learners will also be provided with access to practical sessions at the TAFE campus Barbering facility, providing services on paying male clients.
    • Learners will be required to complete 456 hours of workplace activities and/or practical sessions. Practical sessions can be completed as work placement with a host employer that has been approved by the teaching section.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

    • Equipment/tools of trade and personal protective equipment (PPE) at an approximate cost of $450 - $500 to use in class.
    • Optional Text: Milady Standard Barbering $120
  • As part of this course, you will be required to provide hair and grooming services on paying male clients and may also need to provide clients for some of your practical classes and assessments. You must comply with Work Health & Safety requirements for classes, including wearing closed in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry.

  • This course offering is designed for people who:

    • Has previous workplace experience in barbering or hairdressing. In this course, you will develop skills and knowledge to become a qualified Barber. You will learn how to perform a range of barbering services including: haircutting, shaving, beard design and grooming on male clients.
  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

    • Current employment in Barbering or Hairdressing industry and/or complete required work placement during the course
    • Any Credit Transfers from relevant previous study or Recognition of Prior Learning from relevant workplace experience.
    • You are 21 years of age or over
    • Met the local level entry requirements (identified at an ACFS level 3 for this qualification).
    • Completed an interview.
    • Completed an LLN assessment (RUReady)
    • Attend the compulsory orientation session on 25 January 2022, from 10.00am to 12.30pm.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Barbering qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 26 units of competency, including 21 core and 5 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
