The nationally accredited Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy equips you with the skills to build your salon or freelance career as a beauty therapist. Strengthen your beauty knowledge with advanced techniques and the latest treatments.


Through theoretical and practical course work you will learn and deepen your knowledge:

  • A range of massage techniques
  • Facial techniques including exfoliation and facial massage
  • Nail treatments including manicure and pedicure

The beauty care industry is one of the fastest growing consumer markets in Australia and the number of Beauty Therapists is expected to grow very strongly with around 25,000 job openings by 2023.

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.


TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy as either an apprenticeship or non-apprenticeship so you can style the career you want. Depending on the course you choose - and the campus you want to study at - you will need to provide evidence that you meet all relevant entry criteria.


To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be employed as an apprentice Beauty Therapist
  • Submit your training plan proposal (TPP) with your application
  • Complete formal training with TAFE NSW and your informal, on-the-job training with your employer


To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be over 21 years of age
  • Provide evidence of significant and current industry experience. Your workplace evidence will be reviewed prior to course entry to make sure your skills and knowledge meet course requirements
  • If there are gaps in your industry experience, you will need to do simulated work activities to ensure work evidence requirements are met


No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification.

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you are:

  • Willing to follow strict hygiene and work, health and safety principles
  • Comfortable with massage including head, feet, hands and body
  • An effective communicator to consult with your clients and your team
  • Available to attend an interview with a teacher to determine your suitability

The Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy is a hands-on course in a simulated beauty salon environment. To make the most of your learning you will be expected to practice your skills on your peers and members of the public. You will also need to be comfortable in allowing your peers to practice their skills on you.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • An apprentice
  • Have an employer and training plan proposal
  • Registered with an Apprenticeship Network Provider


There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.


This is a Part Time Day course. You will need to attend approximately 7 hours of class, 1 days a week, for 72 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 2 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, May include Private Study Assignment prep, Elective Unit (workplace support) , Informal workplace training


This Certificate IV Beauty Therapy qualification is only for registered apprentices. You must provide evidence of your apprenticeship registation when you come to the information session.

An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail your units and assessments.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You will be required to purchase equipment/tools of trade and personal protective equipment (PPE) at an approximate cost of $580 - $650.

WH&S requirements for classes: You must wear closed in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry. A tunic is required and personal protective equipment (PPE) to participate in practical classes.
