The nationally recognised Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy refines and evolves the practical skills needed to work as a beauty therapist. Graduate with valuable industry experience to care for your clients from booking and treatment through to delivering quality aftercare and follow-up consultations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy as an apprenticeship. There may also be options available for you to study as a non-apprentice.

Apprenticeship
To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be employed as an apprentice in the beauty industry as evidenced by a letter of support from your employer
  • Submit your training plan proposal (TPP) with your application

Non-apprenticeship

WORK PLACEMENT

There is no work placement requirement for this qualification. As an apprentice, you will gain your experience on-the-job with your employer.

If you are enrolling as a non-apprentice, you need to be in relevant employment or have access to appropriate simulated workplace environments in order to meet the course completion requirements.

You are responsible for arranging your own work placement. Our team can offer support and guidance to assist you.

  • Confidence with massage including head, feet, hands and body
  • The capacity to practice skills on your peers and members of the public and allow peers to practise on you

  • Availability to attend an interview with a teacher to determine your suitability

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
  • employed full time
  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified Beauty Therapist after successful completion

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • attend all classes
  • complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed task

In addition, you will be required to work on clients and supply models for skills practice and assessments.

Your learning resources and assessments are provided online using the Moodle platform. Therefore, you will need access to a personal computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone and reliable internet connection. You are welcome to use the TAFE NSW Library services network for this. .

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time day course.

Duration - 1 year:
You will need to attend approximately 14 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 1 year. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 18.4 hours of other study per week.
You may also be required to complete approximately 4 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research assignment preparation and self-directed independent learning.

Duration - 2 year:
You will need to attend approximately 7 hours of class, 1 day a week, for 2 years. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 9.2 hours of other study per week.
You may also be required to complete approximately 2 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research assignment preparation and self-directed independent learning.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course is designed for people who are registered apprentices. You will learn off the job at TAFE and on the job in your workplace to develop the skills and knowledge to become a qualified Beauty Therapist. On successful completion of this qualification, you will be job ready and able to perfom a range of beauty services that include: Facial and body treatments, lash and brow treatments, nail services, make-up services, retail and customer service.

An individual training plan, will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable, and detail your units and assessments.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

There are a range of study options for NSW Apprentices and eligible non-apprentices with relevant industry work experience in this course.

Under the NSW Government fee-free apprenticeship initiative, NSW apprentices that commence their training on or after 1 July 2018 may be eligible for fee-free training. Apprentices are required to provide evidence of their NSW apprenticeship to finalise their enrolment and applicable fees.

This course is also a TAFE NSW Trade Pathways Qualification and ideal if you have been working in this industry for an extended period of time but havent received a qualification. To be eligible to enrol as a non-apprentice and secure funding, you must firstly meet the Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria and be:

  • over 21 years of age
  • able to demonstrate and provide evidence of extensive industry experience and
  • able to demonstrate relevant ongoing work experience and provide workplace evidence to support the achievement of competence.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to purchase specialist equipment in order to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times. Detailed Student Equipment Lists will be provided at the orientation session or first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers. The cost for specialist equipment for this course is approx. $120 which you will retain on completion of your training.

Students are also required to wear closed in protective footwear and plain black pants or black skirt below the knee. A uniform/tunic can be purchased at a cost of approx $50 to wear in the TAFE NSW simulated salon environment.

RECOGNITION

Before you can start an apprenticeship, you first need to find an employer in the industry you're interested in that will support you through your studies. You and your employer should contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) and tell them you're interested in studying at TAFE NSW.

The ANP will help you and your employer to complete a Training Contract. Once you have a Training Contract, we will help you, your employer and the ANP to complete a Training Plan Proposal. Once you have both these documents, the ANP will lodge them with State Training Services, who will provide further advice about next steps.
