The nationally accredited Diploma of Beauty Therapy qualifies you to become a professional beauty therapist. Strengthen your knowledge on a range of beauty disciplines and choose an area to specialise. Travel the world with transferable skills or use your knowledge to launch your own salon.

INDUSTRY DEMAND

The beauty care industry is one of the fastest growing consumer markets in Australia and the number of beauty therapists is expected to grow very strongly with around 25,000 job openings over 5 years to 2025. There is also demand for beauty therapists to join other industries with cruise ships providing wonderful opportunities for travel, experience and growth.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To make sure this is the appropriate course level for you, you will need to participate in a phone interview with one of our teaching staff.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience provides you withexposure to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.

Work experience is not mandatory for this qualification; however, this is a highly practical course. We strongly recommend you undertake work experience with a suitable industry employer.

You are responsible for arranging your own work experience. Our team can offer support and guidance to assist you.

The Diploma of Beauty is a hands-on course in a simulated beauty salon environment. To make the most of your learning you will be expected to practise your skills on your peers and members of the public. You will also need to be comfortable allowing your peers to practise their skills on you.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to attend 3 days per week in connected, on-line classes with your assigned class group for TERM 1. Following on from term 1 connected on line delivery, you will then be required to attend face to face classes for three days per week for Terms 2, 3, and 4. Throughout you studies you will also have unstructured learning activities including: online revision, assignment preparation and private study. You will be required to successfully complete 25 units of study to gain the Diploma of Beauty Therapy. Learners can also exit the Diploma of Beauty Therapy and be awarded a Certificate III in Beauty Services when they have sucessfully completed the first Semester of their studies, which is the half way mark. If you feel you would like to exit from the Diploma at that time and leave with the Certificate III in Beauty Services this can certainly be arranged for you. If you decide during your first semester of studies that this option is the pathway for you, the following rules will apply:
    Exit Point: Certificate III in Beauty Services: You will need to have successfully completed the theory and practical assessments for all of the core units and elective units ( in total 15 units) for Semester 1 in order to be awarded the Certificate III in Beauty Services SHB30115 as part of the exit pathway.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, blended course. You will need to attend approximately 20 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 15 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 12 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Non-facilitated/undirected learning. This includes learning the student may undertake for revison of content, research and preparations of assessments. Unstructed learning for this qualification comprises of: online revisions, private study and assignment.

Term 1 will be connected on-line delivery, followed by Term 2,3,4 face to face for delivery.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • employed as beauty therapists to provide a broad range of beauty therapy treatments and services including facial treatments, body massage and treatments, hair removal, lash and brow treatments, nail and make-up services. This includes consultation with clients to provide beauty advice, recommend beauty treatments and services, and sell retail skin-care and cosmetic products. The course is suitable school leavers, mature age or those wanting to have a career change as there are no prior work experience or prerequisites required to enrol into this course. Some participants may have completed a part qualification or skill set in Hairdressing or Beauty and/or completed on the job experience and this will permit them to be applicable for recognition of prior learning. The learners with auto credit/RPL will then only be required to attend the face to face sessions for the units they are required to complete to gain the Diploma qualification. Some study may be undertaken by these learners off campus or self-directed. Allowance is made for the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties, such as speakers of languages other than English. Work is typically in beauty salons, waxing clinics, brow bars, nails salons,retail cosmetic counters working for skin care and some hairdressing salons where these services are offered.

Term 1 : will be connected delivery mode involving a flexible delivery of selected units to allow for theory development and knowledge building in areas such as Safety, Hygiene, infection control, retail, then following on into Term 2: with face to face delivery on campus with the focus on practical elements to complement the term 1 content.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 09:00am to 04:00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
If you intend to apply for a VET Student Loan, its important you know your student obligations.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:
You are required to purchase a TAFE Beauty tunic from our supplier approx $80. Incidental Expenses - Any optional kits becomes the physical property of the student and will be retained by the student on completion of training. All learning materials are supplied to the students, students do have the option to purchase kits direct from the maufacturers this includes make up and manicure and pedicure kit. The unit Design and apply makeup for photography, learners will have the opportunity to participate in a final assessment photoshoot. There is a TAFE allocated photograher with an approximate cost of $150 or students may choose to source a photographer of their choice. TAFE NSW has the right and responsibility to make changes to course delivery, timetable and location only if it is in the best interests of all our students or if the advantages of the changes will outweigh any inconveniences (avoiding casual changes to the running of a course or its time, date, fees, or location).
