Course Details

The nationally accredited Diploma of Beauty Therapy qualifies you to become a professional beauty therapist. Strengthen your knowledge on a range of beauty disciplines and choose an area to specialise. Travel the world with transferable skills or use your knowledge to launch your own salon.

INDUSTRY DEMAND

The beauty care industry is one of the fastest growing consumer markets in Australia and the number of beauty therapists is expected to grow very strongly with around 25,000 job openings over 5 years to 2025. There is also demand for beauty therapists to join other industries with cruise ships providing wonderful opportunities for travel, experience and growth.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To make sure this is the appropriate course level for you, you will need to participate in a phone interview with one of our teaching staff.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience provides you withexposure to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.

Work experience is not mandatory for this qualification; however, this is a highly practical course. We strongly recommend you undertake work experience with a suitable industry employer.

You are responsible for arranging your own work experience. Our team can offer support and guidance to assist you.

The Diploma of Beauty is a hands-on course in a simulated beauty salon environment. To make the most of your learning you will be expected to practise your skills on your peers and members of the public. You will also need to be comfortable allowing your peers to practise their skills on you.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

  • Students must have successfully completed the SHB30115 Certificate III in Beauty Services (or equivalent) to enrol in this course. Students are required to compete a screening process with section staff. This will ensure students are suitable and capable to complete the program. Students will attend information/orientation session and are required to purchase personal equipment kit prior to commencement of class. It is recommended if you have questions or concerns to talk to the section staff prior to enrolling
    -Full time students are not required to do additional work placement hours. It is expected that students find a salon and complete some unsupervised hours in a salon to master skills. This can help get part time work and lead to employment at the end of the course.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Students need to attend all classes, complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed tasks. In addition, you will be required to work on clients and be prepared to have treatments completed on yourself. You will be required to supply models for assessments and practice.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time day blended delivery course. You will need to attend approximately 15.6 hours of class per week for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 4.4 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 8 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including practical skill development, private study and assignment preparation.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
If you intend to apply for a VET Student Loan, its important you know your student obligations.
