Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have the primary responsibility of engaging the customer, maintaining daily store operations and delivering on organisational expectations. They have sound knowledge of product and service offerings. These individuals possess a range of well-developed skills where discretion and judgement is required. They work with some independence under limited supervision. Some individuals working at this level are responsible for supervising other team members and monitoring day-to-day workplace operations.

The qualification provides a pathway to work in a diverse range of retail settings including specialty retailers, supermarkets, department stores and quick service restaurants.

Individuals with this qualification are able to perform roles such as frontline sales assistant, customer service representative, shop assistant, retail supervisor, team leader and senior sales assistant.

To successfully complete this course, it would be beneficial:

  • if you have computer access outside of the TAFE course program hours, however this training is supported by online learning resources and can also be accessed at the TAFE NSW Campus you are studying through.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • working within a registered traineeship contract.

This is a workbased course. This program is designed with a foundation of workplace learning over a period of 2 years.
You will be employed in the retail industry for approximately 35 to 38 hours per week.
The formal knowledge component of the program will be supported through the use of an online Learning Management System through Training Resource Solutions for the SIR Training Package.
There will be 1 scheduled contact via phone to support your understanding of the LMS, 4 scheduled 2 hour workplace visits to support skills assessment as well as 8 x 30min (one per TAFE Term) scheduled managed contact points.
You will build the majority of your skills and knowledge development through your employment on the job.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5 hours of additional study each week outside of work hours.


This course offering is designed for people who are working within a registered traineeship contract.

    Students also have access to libraries where they can borrow a range of resources and get personalised help from library support staff. Libraries also provide access to online resources (eBooks, eJournals, eVideos) that are available from any computer and most mobile devices. Free WiFi and charged printing and photocopying are also available.

This course is currently scheduled for workplace trainees. An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail your units and assessments.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
