Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who operate as visual merchandising specialists. These individuals possess a broad range of technical skills and sound knowledge of visual merchandising principles to plan and coordinate visual merchandising activities. They operate independently, make a range of operational decisions, and may have some responsibility for others.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in a range of retail settings including speciality and fashion retailers, supermarkets and department stores. It also provides a pathway to work on a freelance basis.

Individuals with this qualification are able to perform roles such as visual merchandiser, retail store visual merchandiser, visual merchandising stylist and event visual merchandiser.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

To successfully complete this course, you will need: - To successfully complete this course students will need to attend all classes for all 16 units of the course and achieve AC grades for each of the units. - This is a physical course so students need to be able to move around freely, comfortably climb ladders and work tasks at a height and from the ceiling and have the strength to move mannequins and retail store fixtures.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Part-Time Day, Blende course. You will need to attend approximately 8.3 hours of class, over 1 days a week, for 18 Months. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 2.3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 4.1 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Research, study, preparation reviewing class work from the Moodle platform and self-initiated learning.
Visiting retailers and shopping centres to keep abreast of current and emerging trends, follow on social media VM ambassadors for a range of prominent brands, follow international trends, read VM subscriptions
Students are also provided with the opportunity to undertake 30 hours of work placement during their vacation periods over the length of their course.

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • are creative in nature and be interested in the retail sector.
    The role of a visual merchandiser is very physical so they do need to be mobile and have strength to move large objects.
    They are not be expected to possess any visual merchandising industry skills.

    As a TAFE NSW student in this course, you will have access to:

You will need to attend approximately 9 hours of class a week over 1 days per week for 54 weeks. Your classes will run on Wednesday from 9:00am - 6:15pm.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

  • Students are required to have a kit of tools that are an essential part of the visual merchandiser?s role.
    This would include but not limited to staple gun and staples, hammer, scissors, wire cutters, nylon, steel pins, Stanley knife, glue gun and glue sticks.
