INDUSTRY DEMAND

Participation in fitness is one of the most popular types of sport and recreation for adults in Australia. This is reflected in the significant growth seen in the industry over the past five years. Continued growth is expected with employment forecasts anticipating an additional 2,090 instructors joining the industry by 2024.

To be eligible for this course, you will need to provide evidence of:

  • A current First Aid and CPR certificate

  • Your academic transcript that shows you have successfully completed the following units from the Certificate III in Fitness:

  • SISFFIT001 Provide health screening and fitness orientation

  • SISFFIT002 Recognise and apply exercise considerations for specific populations

  • SISFFIT003 Instruct fitness programs

  • SISFFIT004 Incorporate anatomy and physiology principles into fitness programming

  • SISFFIT005 Provide healthy eating information

  • SISFFIT006 Conduct fitness appraisals

  • SISFFIT014 Instruct exercise to older clients

  • SISXCCS001 Provide quality service

** Traineeship **

TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate IV in Fitness as a traineeship. To be eligible for this course as a trainee, you must:

  • Meet the above entry requirements
  • Be employed inthe fitness industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signedtraineeship contract

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.

You will need to meet the following success requirements to be able to undertake work experience within industry. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Working with Children Check (WWCC) as children and young people may be your clients.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience provides you withexposure to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning environment.

Work experience is not mandatory for this qualification; however, this is a highly practical course with your course work structured to include 40 hours of work experience.

If gym facilities are available at your TAFE NSW campus, you will be rostered to complete this component onsite working with real clients.
If your TAFE NSW campus does not have a gym, you will need to arrange work experience with a TAFE NSW industry partner, local gym or other fitness setting. Talk to our team about the options available to you.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • Intermediate English language proficiency
  • An appropriate level of fitness and mobility to perform fitness activities
  • Access to the internet and a computer or other mobile device
  • Time for self-paced study and assessment completion outside of scheduled class times
  • Fitness related professional experience or through your previous studies

RECOMMENDED AGE AT COMPLETION

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

This qualification is designed for delivery to students who have completed a Certificate III Fitness OR, as a minimum, received recognition of prior learning against the required pre-requisite units.
The qualification requires students to demonstrate a range programs which have related fitness requirements.
You are required to provide evidence prior to enrolment:
SISFFIT001 Provide health screening and fitness orientation
SISFFIT002 Recognise and apply exercise considerations for specific populations
SISFFIT003 Instruct fitness programs
SISFFIT004 Incorporate anatomy and physiology principles into fitness programming

To successfully complete this course:
You are required to complete 40 hours of documented work placement that they arrange themselves.
The qualification requires students to demonstrate a range programs which have related fitness requirements.

  • A Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) level at ACSF Level 3 when commencing the course and basic computer skills. This will be assessed as part of your enrolment process.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Part-time Evening/flexible Face to Face course. You will need to attend approximately 21 hours of class, over 3 evenings a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, there is 14 hours of other study per week.

You can also expect approximately 10 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including unstructered self-directed learning, assessment preparation, online activities, skills practice, research and revision activities.

Attendance on Saturday's or a fouth evening may be required to complete practical assessment activities.


** IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU? **

This qualification is designed for delivery to students who have completed a Certificate III Fitness OR, as a minimum, received recognition of prior learning against the required pre-requisite units. They may be working in industry at a Certificate III level or may continue on from their Certificate III qualification directly into a Certificate IV. Therefore, this training and assessment strategy is designed to meet the learning requirements of both existing workers and pre-employment students.
Individuals as a whole will be from diverse backgrounds and represent a wide variety of age groups and ethnicities generally.
Individuals as a whole have a medium level of literacy and can generally work independently with minimal supervision.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 05:30pm to 09:30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
