Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working in kitchens who use a defined and limited range of food preparation and cookery skills to prepare food and menu items. They are involved in mainly routine and repetitive tasks and work under direct supervision. This qualification does not provide the skills required by commercial cooks, which are covered in SIT30816 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in kitchen operations in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafs, and coffee shops; and institutions such as aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons, and schools.

Possible job titles include: breakfast cook catering assistant fast food cook sandwich hand takeaway cook.

This course is primarily for new entrants to the hospitality sector or for those who may want to become an apprentice chef in the future or seek employment in the caf?, eateries, bistros, juice bars or fast food outlets.

To successfully complete this course, you will need: - To attend Lithgow TAFE Campus 3 days per week - Actively participate in all course instruction and activities - Be able to work cooperatively as part of a team

Students may be required to complete work placement within a commercial kitchen or restaurant to achieve competencies within this qualification.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a face to face full time course. You will need to attend approximately 18.3 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 18 weeks.

You may also be required to complete approximately 7.2 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including self-directed learning, reading and activities, assessment preparation and private study.

This course offering is designed for people who may include school leavers, job seekers and people who are seeking a career change. Typically, students will have an interest in cookery, yet may have a limited knowledge of the hospitality industry. The simulated teaching environment ?The Valley View"restaurant and commercial kitchen, provides students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learnt with ?real? customers. Support services will be engaged for any students that require educational or other support to assist them to successfully progress through the course.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday & Tuesday from 9.00am to 2.45pm, and Thursday from 9.00am to 1.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.
