The nationally accredited Certificate III in Hospitality gives you a solid foundation of operational skills to work in the fast-paced hospitality industry. This course will prepare you for a career as a function host, food and beverage attendant, barista or gaming attendant.

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • A valid license or proof of age card, to demonstrate that you are over 18 years of age

This is mandatory for the following electives

  • Provide responsible service of alcohol (RSA)
  • Provide responsible gambling services (RCG)

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practice responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

During your course you will undertake a mandatory 36 service periods (shifts) of work placement with a suitable industry employer. Some of these service periods are scheduled as part of your course for the observation and assessment of your progress.

The remaining service periods are undertaken through a TAFE NSW approved work placement, through paid work or a combination of both.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

The NSW Liquor and Gaming regulations require you to be 18 years of age or older to obtain a competency card that allows you to serve or supply alcohol or work with gaming machines. This qualification may include the following electives with licensing requirements that are regulated by Liquor and Gaming NSW:

  • Provide responsible service of alcohol (RSA)
  • Provide responsible gambling services (RCG)

If you undertake these electives, you will be issued with an interim RSA or RCG certificate. The interim certificate licenses you to work in the industry immediately and is only valid for a short period while you apply for your permanent competency card through Service NSW.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course:
This qualification requires students to complete 36 service periods as part of the following units:

  • SITHIND004 Work effectively in hospitality service: 36 service periods
  • SITHFAB003 Operate a bar: three (3) service periods:
  • SITHFAB004 Prepare and serve alcoholic beverages: three (3) service periods
  • SITHFAB007 Serve food and beverage: five (5) service periods
  • SITHFAB014 Provide table service of food and beverage: 12 service periods (This elective can be used in place of SITHFAB007)
  • SITHIND004 Work effectively in hospitality service is a core unit and the 36 service periods required for this unit have been mapped to the other units listed above so that 36 service periods will meet the requirements of all the units.
    A minimum of fourteen (14) service periods are scheduled in the course. Additional service periods may be able to be scheduled depending on campus-based opportunities. For any service periods not able to be undertaken at the TAFE NSW Campus, students will be required to meet service period requirements through the following:
  • paid employment or,
  • work placement

The paid employment or work placement must be able to provide the range of experiences required for SITHIND004 Work effectively in hospitality service. If the students paid workplace is not deemed appropriate, they must undertake work placement.
A Service Period Logbook will be utilised by the student to capture evidence of service periods undertaken through work placement.

Eligibility for work placement
Work placement may be necessary in this course where the student has not secured paid work in a suitable workplace environment. An individual student circumstances. Work placement will be arranged by TAFE NSW once students have gained enough initial knowledge to ensure work placement is meaningful and they have enough understanding of the industry and safety to be able to operate safely in a workplace environment.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, blended course. You will need to attend approximately 17.1 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 17 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 8.9 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 3.4 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including class preparation and independent research.

Recognition of Prior Learning:
Students are able to have their competency from prior learning and work experience recognised in this qualification through the following arrangements.

  • Evidence of completing formal training
  • Work experience: on the job experience and informal training
  • Life experience: community group involvement, family activities, sports, hobbies, leisure activities, unpaid work, organising events, and/or travel.
    Applications for RPL will be assessed on an individual basis and may be granted when a portfolio of evidence is assessed in accordance with TAFE NSW Recognition Policy and Procedures and the student is deemed competent for the unit/s of competency for which the application applies. Alternatively, the student may nominate to undertake a challenge assessment for the opportunity to demonstrate competency.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled to run on Tuesday and Wednesday, from 9.00am to 3.30pm and Thursday, from 12.30pm to 10.00pm (in TAFE NSW Nightcap Restaurant). This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

Students undertaking elective SITHGAM001 Provide responsible conduct of gambling are required to pay an incidental charge of $41 for the RCG Interim Certificate.
Students undertaking the elective SITHFAB002 Provide responsible service of alcohol are required to pay an incidental charge of $86 for the RSA Interim Certificate.

Students undertaking these units will be issued with the relevant Liquor and Gaming NSW resource prior to the course commencement. A short pre-course activity will also be provided for students undertaking the RSA SITHFAB002, to be completed prior to the course.
