Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of commercial cooks who use a wide range of well-developed cookery skills and sound knowledge of kitchen operations to prepare food and menu items. Using discretion and judgement, they work with some independence and under limited supervision using plans, policies and procedures to guide work activities.

This qualification provides a pathway to work as a commercial cook in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, clubs, pubs, cafs, and coffee shops.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

**COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS**

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)

  • employed full time

  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal

  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified commercial cook after successful completion.

    To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to complete total of 48 Service periods (Workplacement or in TAFE simulated environment ) for this course. For more information please discuss this with teachers at one of the information sessions

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Full Time course. You will need to attend approximately 20 hours of class, for 4 days a week, for 1 Year. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7.3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 3.4 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, it may include assessment preparation/private study/service mandatory work experience.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday 8.30 am to 2.30 pm, Tuesday 10 am to 1 pm, Wednesday 8.30 am to 2.30 pm Thursday 8.30 am to 2.30 pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
