Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of highly skilled senior operators who use a broad range of hospitality skills combined with managerial skills and sound knowledge of industry to coordinate hospitality operations. They operate independently, have responsibility for others and make a range of operational business decisions.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in any hospitality industry sector as a departmental or small business manager. The diversity of employers includes restaurants, hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafs, and coffee shops. This qualification allows for multiskilling and for specialisation in accommodation services, cookery, food and beverage and gaming.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

  • Any previous study that you have completed at school, TAFE or any other RTO in order to gain National Recognition.

  • Work experience if you wish to claim Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

    To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Full uniform - long sleeve black button-up shirt, black pants/skirt, black leather enclosed shoes, black socks/stockings.

  • Equipment kit - waiters friend and black half apron

  • License fees ? these cover RSA ($85.00) and RCG ($40.00) certificates. If you already have these you are not required to pay these fees.

  • You will also be required to hire a locker - this costs $20.00 and is organised through our Clerical Officer in Block F, Room F.G.12 in the first week of classes. No bags are permitted in the classrooms, kitchens or restaurant areas. Locker fees are refunded at the end of the semester.

  • You may be eligible for assistance if you have barriers to your education - please contact the section for more information.

  • at least 36 service periods in documented work placement as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency. Securing a suitable work placement with an employer is the responsibility of the student, however your teacher can assist with this process.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, blended delivery course. You will need to attend approximately 19 hours of class, over 4 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 5.7 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including assessment preparation, research and private study.

Attendance on a Friday is required for 8 weeks only - Friday, 7 February to Friday, 13 March 2020 and Friday, 8 to 15 May 2020.

RSA is being delivered on Friday, 21 February 2020 - this is required before Restaurant Services and you must be present on this date unless you already have RSA from a previous course.

RCG is being delivered on Friday, 28 February 2020 - you may not have another opportunity to gain this qualification within your course date so you must be present on this date unless you already have RCG from a previous course.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • are from diverse backgrounds including school leavers, mature age, career change, long term unemployed, returning to work and existing workers wanting formal qualifications. Training and assessment strategies reflect the skills and knowledge required of industry and industry practices are holistically assessed during the delivery of the units.
  • the elective options for this course follow a Food and Beverage focus, however you may choose to undertake electives with a Commercial Cookery or Patisserie focus - contact the section on 02 4620 1734 for more information about these pathways. Should these options be undertaken, additional equipment will be required, including a full Cookery or Patisserie Chef's Uniform ($100.00 - $200.00) and appropriate toolkit ($200.00 - $350.00). These items must be purchased at a Hospitality supply store such as Unicut or Fraser & Hughes.

  • RUReady Literacy and Numeracy diagnostic tools are utilised to assess whether students may require assistance to complete their course. This is completed by all students. Should the need be identified, appropriate models of assistance will be applied to individuals or cohorts within this group.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, 9:30 to 5:00, Tuesday 9:00 to 3:30, Thursday 9:30 to 3:00 and Friday 9:00 to 3:30. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.

To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:

  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
