The nationally recognised Statement of Attainment in Responsible Service of Alcohol qualifies you to legally serve drinks in licensed venues across New South Wales. Step up to the bar, use your people skills and find work in the vibrant hospitality industry.

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Photo identification such as your licence or proof of age card

NOTE: A photo identification card is needed to enrol in courses with an RSA unit, as it is recommended that students are at least 17 years of age. However, to legally sell or serve alcohol you must be 18 years of age.

Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol is the mandatory training unit required to sell, serve or supply alcohol in NSW. This is regulated by Liquor & Gaming NSW, who have approved TAFE NSW to deliver this training.

Competency cards

To get your NSW RSA competency card:

  • Present your interim certificate (issued after successful completion of your RSA unit) to a Service NSW Centre and complete a100 point identification check. You are responsible for payment of the fee of approximately $87 for the Liquor and Gaming NSW Competency Card.
  • Service NSW will post your card to you. You should allow up to one month for its delivery.
  • Digital competency cards are available via the Service NSW app


You can take this course to become job-ready but you will not be able to serve or sell alcohol until you are 18 years old.

Recognition of NSW RSA competency in other jurisdictions

Responsible service of alcohol legislative and knowledge requirements differ across borders. Check with the relevant state authority to see if your NSW RSA competency is recognised.


To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • The ability to stand on your feet for long periods of time
  • A willingness to do shift work
  • Good judgement skills
